I have to know... how did you get started in music production?

Did you go to school? Study courses online? Learned from trial and error? Or a combination of all three? How did you get over the initial learning curve of becoming a music producer?

For someone starting out, music production can seem daunting and it can be hard to know where to start.

Curious to hear where our community started from :) Comment below!

Simply started with fooling around with your parents or friends parents guitars and instruments that were left in the closet and hooking up mics to an old stereo or portable cassette recorder and having fun with it . The funny part about it is getting caught doing this and the parents being ok about the creativity and being glad we put it to good use , so many lessons and gear purchases and concert goings later here I am . Funny one of my friends is a college professor in music ( not guitar ) even though we all moved away got jobs etc etc we still have this drive to make music and capture it . I enjoy cooking , painting , and everything that is art really ..

I started by learning guitar, both by listening to music I liked and learning it, and myself and a group of friends would teach each other music we learned. In my teens I worked as an engineer in a recording studio and also did some session work, along with playing live gigs on guitar and sometimes vocals.

Over time I learned piano and other instruments, and when computers became powerful enough to run software that could emulate a studio environment I started recording my own music.

I learned to mix on a 16 track desk by sitting in and watching many people do so (including sessions for Joe Jackson and former Monkees band members), and took the same techniques to a virtual studio. I also mixed sound for live bands in many different indoor and outdoor venues, including a few reasonably famous artists in quite a few different genres, along with some musical theater.
Sweet child in time...

No idea. Whenever i say that it's a bot i get a mod rebuke, and a :smack: for being so mean to it. I mean, to her. Or so. Actually, i have a hard time believing that the point of this is anything else than to either - create interest for Sarah Command (whoever she is), to analyze user behavior and opinions (the most likely), or, some silly random user interaction, like chat bots, or something like that.

Well, OK, i could just remove this forum from My Forums, but, i still wonder what this is supposed to be exactly. Noone ever cleared that up.

i was just walking past Abbey Road Studios one day, and some Oxbridge geezer shouted out of a window "oi! fatboy, does one know anything about popular music?"

i said "no", he invited me in and gave me a job as an engineer. 1743 albums later.....

right place, right time.

i was born awesome.
so it was music, astronaught or race car driver.
i cant drive and im scared of space.

the same as most kids my age, i was 13.

although, id had music in my past, choir boy/family jams... (irish rebel songs mainly)
it was around my teen years, i got in to music id found myself, rather than been played by my mum, aunts, uncles, grandparents...
id found the metal :band:
the really grindy kind :D napalm death/carcass/paradise lost and such...

so wanted to play guitar.
bought guitar/miniamp/tape recorder (as in standard tape rec, not 4 track, i was a 13 year old idiot)
got in to recording one note drones, slicing and retaping casstte tapes :o
ballache city.
gave up on most of that when my son was born.
then computers became ubiquitous, which lead to a discovery of soft synths, where my previous experience with synths had been very minor, playing odd ones over the years but never feeling it was an option because i was not a rich man...

found synths and software studios to be a godsend to do what used to take days in minutes on a computer

now my son is all grown up, so i have more spare cash :D
so now i can afford synths.

i play because i have to!

I was 11 years old, on holiday at the beach. I heard some music and though: "It's ok, but I could make it better". And that's how it started - the mission to improve the world.

Early years wasn't much of success - I tried Jaskola Buzz, the Fruity Loops - but that didn't quite work. However, I also tried DJIng and that was quite successful - in 2007 already got my own weekly radioshow.

I started to study electronic, hoping hat could guide me in the right direction. DSP is the keyword here. Also attended some faculties in acoustics, and that gave me unique knowledge unlikely to get anyhwhere else. I also learned how to learn on my own and finally started making progress, creating some sort of music that's actually listenable.

I couldn't quite finish a track until I assembled my own PC with dedicated audio interface. That was stable and fast, finally let me focus on producing and not bugtracking.

Now, almost at the age of 30, I'm about to finish first remix requested from label. They asked for it, not me ;)
