So you’re now going to provide free regular updates, this is a good move.

When will the free updates start?
The current paid update prices have been too often and too expensive.

Hi,

thanks for your feedback! Yes, another upgrade policy that values a "fast decision" on the latest upgrade sounds logic - on the first glance...

But in the sense of our above post this offer would add another "force" to the customer to stay up to date. And again, you will find yourself in that "tragic rush circle" that turns around the "missed chance" only. Where to draw the line? We don't want to support that thinking! We want that you to feel happy with your current version and use it as much you can (there are a lot users out there that are extremely happy e.g. with version 5 or 6) and - in case you feel to decide for the new features because e.g. you find them useful for your new project - you have all the time you need to decide for the upgrade. Turn it around: We don't want to punish our customers who are happy with using their investments a long time. In our view this is a much more sustainable position that values the current development and our customers creative rhythm versus an aggressive "get a discount now if you decide fast today" call for action. From our viewpoint this is a doom loop and it turns out in a non-creative, hectic living that has all the potential for stress and harm if applied long term. Does that make sense too?

Having said that, of course we have a very generous way to deal with "corner cases" like if you had purchased the older version a couple of weeks or months before the new one releases. As stated several times: Just drop us a line and we will find a solution for you.

Updates have always been free, you're thinking of upgrades (although not a fan of companies redefining .5 releases from updates to upgrades)

Post

@freq - that all sounds good to me and i totally support you in not contributing to the 'price collapse' of the industry and your work. i think it's very reasonable thing to do and I hope other developers take note. good luck!

This all makes perfect sense. However, charging for x.5 versions does not and I can't think of another company that does so (somebody will no doubt dig up an example).

Post

I'm pretty sure Steinberg charge for .5 updates to Cubase, but could be wrong.

Anyway, @freq, your reasoning is quite good, but I honestly think you're hurting yourself by not allowing tiered upgrades. The matter of the fact is that you're probably losing money on people that would impulsively upgrade from e.g. 7.5 to 8 in a heartbeat if they got a slightly better discount than, for example, users upgrading from Crusher-X 5 to 8. There will always be people that want to stay updated at all times, and if you encourage them you'll most likely make MORE money in the long run, or at the very least ensure that you have a more steady revenue stream every release cycle instead of having 'gaps' where existing users skip 1, 2 or 3 version upgrades to save some money.

Anyway, this is just a discussion, you're free to do as you please obviously :)

Post

@BeeDog thanks for your analysis - we deeply will consider. As you said, we always feel that there is no right or wrong just a continuous cycle of optimization possibilities. It truly depends on e.g. this discussion if people tends more to support a tiered upgrade offer in the future.

To make things not complex and foreseeable for our customers we will stay with the current approach for crusher-X 8. And now its time to get back to work on the next free update - a couple of customer feedback needs to be build in!

I think accsone is doing right with the decision not to follow the "insane price dumping circle"..I agree with the accsone statement above...
It is a real hard work to develop, to test, debug and release a very complex software like CrusherX ....and it is another cup of coffee than coding a simple "bread and butter" compressor plug-in..I think you get a very good tool for creative work with good personal support..and accsone is not Apple or Yamaha..earning money with other things than audio software.

Post

the price dumping stuff is really just a race to the bottom for software.
