Really? You don't think the presets it ships with are enough? I think it ships with way too many presets. I'd be tempted to pay extra for a version with just 100 or so carefully curated patches. I have better things to do than wade through thousands of presets.

tbh Im not hearing anything good about the extra presets so i'm not overly bothered. I bought a hardstyle pack for it a while ago, and it was average at best.

Based on your constant replies about a DAW that's been discontinued in a thread regarding a completely different product and developer... I don't know about that.

Just like Potter Stewart's famous test for "hard-core pornography," when it comes to DAWs, I know it when I see it.
And from the screenshots I've seen of Orion, it was a DAW.

Anyway this is a fascinating debate. Someone should really start a poll.

Currently on sale for <$10. For some reason I never really took WA Prod stuff seriously but Ascension was a complete steal so this is a no brainer for the price.

I just picked up Babylon for under $7 with my virtual cash. Not a bad synth at all. I've gotten a few nice sounds out of it so far but....how the heck do you assign the Mod Wheel or Aftertouch to Vibrato ?

I've looked at the manual but no answer. There are MW and AT as Mod sources but no Vibrato Amount as a destination. Or LFO amount or anything that one would normally look for when trying to add MW/AT to Vibrato.

There is Delay for the Vibrato section but again there is no control with MW/AT.

Anybody who owns Babylon ever figure it out ? Am I just missing something obvious ?

EDIT: Meh never mind. Babylon just shattered the record for synth I got bored with the fastest. Like I said not a bad little synth but just too feature poor for me. I mainly picked it up to get the free Reason Rack VST3 deal just to see what that's all about.

If you're looking for new synth I recommend Hybrid 3 instead if you don't mind the iLok e-licenser. It's on sale at PB now for $5 and is far more advanced than Babylon. I've owned and loved it for several years.

I've had Hybrid for years but never got into it at all. I don't think I even bothered to install it on my current workstation. Too much stuff is hidden behind too many tabs and it's such a standard/common architecture. It may have seemed amazing once but these days it doesn't really stand out, hence the price I suppose.

If it was my money I'd spend another fiver and grab Vacuum Pro instead. That's still a lot of synth for $10. But Babylon is definitely something without a whole lot of depth. I hate vibrato so I wouldn't know how to dial it in.

I've had Vacuum Pro for years but don't have it installed now. One again nice little synth but just too simple.

Maybe I'll install it again and give it another go.

Simple is good. Simple means you spend less time noodling and more time getting shit done. Although in the case of Vacuum Pro, I usually end up just playing with it for hours because I really don't have anything that comes close to the filthy, wretched nature of its sound. Trueno is probably closest but it's a monosynth so you can't stack filth on top of filth like you can in Vac Pro. And it's hardware so I can't even add multiple instances.

Remember this? I think it had an option on the front panel to overlay some garbage like a cigarette butt.

At 3:00 is the aptly named "Bone Saw" preset

I'm partial to the last one - "Carp".

Yeah, I was playing with it again the other day but it doesn't quite do it for me. It's more like any old VSTi being played through an overdrive/distortion effect, rather than than the grit and dirt being integral to the signal path. It's actually the GUI that keeps me coming back to it but I still haven't found a reason to spend $80 on it.

Simple is good for you. I like complex synths and I get plenty of "sh*t done".

I got bored with simple synths 30 years ago.

I got bored with synths 38 years ago, which is to say that, much like a nice spreadsheet or database application, they never really interested me. They have no intrinsic value to me, beyond their ability to help me finish songs. They are just tools and a good synth excites me about as much as a good hammer. Like a good hammer, the best synths are the ones that get the basics right and don't need any fancy features.
