I make arpeggios (or sometimes use an arpeggiator or sequencer) and then think, maybe I should make variations, but where, when? Are there any guidelines, techniques, tricks that might open my eyes?

With that in mind, I'm thinking the best thing would be to listen to examples. But I don't think of a lot off of the top of my head--Tangerine Dream's Tangrams (A Side) comes to mind--I love it.

Request: Can you all please recommend some songs that do interesting things with arpeggios (maybe via arpeggiators/sequencers--or not)? Also I would appreciate advice on effectively using arpeggios and the not-so-obvious things that can be done with them.

Well, I went digging and found some that sound great and have some variety.

N'to - Alter Ego

Mees Dierdorp - Aviar Alom

Trivecta - Axis

And of course, Tangerine Dream - Tangram (Set 1)

Not sure if I'll have any insights (maybe arpeggios are just arpeggios), but a lot of filter sweeps and panning are obvious. Melody, harmony, rhythm will take some listening.

I just got through the A section of my favorite electronic music. Let me know if you have any good arpeggio songs in mind that I can look to.

It's not about arpeggios, it's about improvisation and sequences. But I hope it will be useful. May be it will open your eyes. (Google if you need more info.)

Great resources. Many thanks.

Aside: A bit less than 30 years ago, we did a week or two with "Cantaloupe Island" in a jazz improvisation class I took. I also tried to impress a Russian woman by playing it on a ballroom piano around that time (it kinda worked).
