Hey !

I did my best on that project and would be grateful to receive any feedback about the weaknesses of my mix. In exchange, I would be happy to comment your own mix if it can help you ;)

Musically, not what I expected around here. The mix is clean. But it lacks any kind of punch or dynamics. It's like everything is all at the same level and pretty lifeless. On the plus side, it isn't muddy at all, which is a common problem with early mixes. But the whole thing is just lifeless. There is no low end to speak of. If I put this through a SPAN, it's probably flat as a board.

Believe me, I've heard a lot worse (like I said, it's clean) but it just sits there.

Musically, I won't comment because it's not my thing. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard anything like this so it must be an ethnic thing particular to a certain country or region.

Welcome to KVR

My wife thinks she understood a little (come on - tell me) but I don't speak Hindi myself (or is it Urdu?). I do love Indian music though. Where I came from in England, we used to have a Mela festival every year in the park and I would always go and sample the food, watch cooking demonstrations and listen to the Bangra and more traditional forms of music. It would be hard for me to comment on the mix because I only have the laptop speakers at the moment and they don't have a good bass response but I just wanted to welcome you and say hi. :tu:

I'm English (actually Anglo-American) so I love Indian food. Every birthday I go out for a Chicken Korma. Interesting fact: Chicken Tikka Masala is a dish that originated in England, not India... I have to stop this food journey because its making me hungry 2 hours before dinner!
Anyway, back to the mix. The mix lacks compression, the low end might sound better if its beefed up.
The arrangement is good Ok. Interesting track, nice to hear some ethnic stuff thats a bit different.

the mix sounded clean on my little 3" sony diecast mini speakers.
if it sounded good on them, it'll sound good on just about anything. hhah
the song itself was very cartoonish. not my usual cupa.
welcome to kvr.

Could you precise what you mean by "lifeless" ? Are you speaking about the composition or the mix ? Do you mean the dynamic between the sections of the song or the dynamic between the instruments themself ? Or is it a problem of momentum (not enough variations ?) ?

I think I also feel what you mean (if I compare it to my reference track for exemple) but I'm not sure where the problem lies.

There is no low end to speak of. If I put this through a SPAN, it's probably flat as a board.
The low end (50-200hz) actually contains both the bass synth and the kick. But I have to admit that you are probably right concerning the bass level. I already had a doubt when comparing my mix with my reference track. But I wanted a confirmation from someone else before to modify the balance of the differents tracks.

By the way, my reference track :

Lifeless is hard to explain. Your song sounds like taking a well made record and putting it through some kind of filter that takes out all the dynamics, richness, fatness, movement, everything from it. It's like looking at thin tissue paper. In short, it was boring to listen to. It just didn't do anything.

Sorry, I can't put it into better words. It's like trying to define porn. I can't, but I know what it is when I see it.

Maybe someone else can put into words what I'm trying to say.

I didn't expect to surprise you with that track ! To my europeans ears, it sounds like a lot of 2000's bands (or at least attempts to sound like...). I sampled a 1930's greek song. I'm very very curious about the reason why your wife took it for hindi, funny... These are very differents languages, but who knows ? Perhaps some similar words ?

After discovering the song, I looked for the lyricks and realised that the text wasn't what I expected. This actually isn't a "traditionnal song". It is more like an urban track from the 30's ! (a man smoking weed and drinking wine^^). I found it amusing and decided to mix it with the "modern" urban music style (ok that kind of beat is no longer so fresh today...).

You probably are right. I'm not very confident when using compressors. In consequences, I often just don't use any.

When you speak about the lack of compression, do you mean that my mix has too much dynamic range ? Or to use the kick as a trigger for sidechain compression on my buses ? Or that the individual tracks lack of personnality ?

I definitively have to adress the low end. I have to think about a way to make it more present without compromising the clarity of the mix. :dog:

I totally agree. The song itself has not so much interest. And using so many vsti was an insult to my beliefs
