Does a ‘slave’ device need to be connected to the PC for any reason?

I’m thinking about buying something like an Elektron Analog Rytm mk2. I would want enough I/O to record the channels individually, so I’m looking for a budget solution to this which led me to the Steinberg MR816. My PC has no FireWire ports, but I would only really need it to run as a slave device into my Apollo Twin. Is there anything stopping me from doing this?

Both devices seem to have ADAT connection (from a quick look at the specs, I don't know/use neither of them though), so I think you should be able to run the Apollo as master and the Steinberg as (standalone) slave indeed.

edit:
Another (ADAT) option may be the Behringer ADA8000/8200.

Cool, I suspected as much. I'm totally open to suggestions, so I'll check out the Behringer unit as well. Greatly appreciated :)
