But the Volumeshaper 6 has a compressor and the Duck has none of it :?:

Then the Duck would only be a customized volume automation like "gain riding" without compression :?:

Exactly! Duck doesnt have a treshold or something. It lowers the volume in general, so it wont replace a compressor. Most people will use these tools as rhytmic gating effects, but they are also good to imitate the pumping effect of sidechained compressor (which i do very often). The concept is pretty basic, but the most simple ideas are often the best ones :tu: I find these tools extremly valuable.

BTW, I'm wondering how many people use the Volumeshaper 6 for (noise) gating?

For many years I used the ReaGate from REAPER which is pretty good (for example for clearing up vocals and for beats) and even has hysteresis control. But now I'm on Cakewalk by Bandlab (still have to start learning, so far I haven't made a single sound with it).

The Cakewalk Sonitus:gate doesn't have hysteresis :?:

But the next one on my Gate list would be Renegate by Auburn Sounds!

If you're looking for the best gate, that might be a question for gearsluts. They are more focused on recording and mixing effects. I'm using traditional gates next to nothing, as most of my sources are VST's.

Instead of removing noise, i often use plugins like Denise Noize 2 or Devious Machines Texture to add some noise  Might sound strange, but filtered noise on a low level with a small amount of attack and decay, can add a nice glueing effect to shakers, hihats or whole beats. It's also good to improve claps and snares. I can highly recommend these two plugins!

It works for noise gating, but it's manual so it can be more tedious to use compared to just using a gate.

If you're looking for a normal gate, you can try G8 by Unfiltered Audio. It has lookahead (EDIT:ReaGate has lookahead too) and hysteresis . Plugin Alliance gives it's users a $20 voucher every now and then to use, and G8 is $20 during sales.

bro, the "pre-open" control in ReaGate is the look-ahead

VolumeShaper when you want to create advanced volume shaping. Kickstart when you want something fast. :)

Oof you're right, just looked it up in the manual. I hate how different plugin manufacturers have so many different names for lookahead.

Yeah, it can be a real pain, haha
