What are the differences between the Synclavier and the DX7?

Can they do the same things?

Bonus points for relating it to the VST versions since I have no interest (nor money) in ever owning the hardware.

Free DEXED is an almost perfect plugin version of the Yamaha DX7 Mark I. Grab it!

The difference was about $180,000 :hihi:

Arturia has a Synclavier emulation:

Indeed. But the sound quality, to my ears, was awful

Synclavier - Additive synthesis, sample playback, resynthesis, basic FM. 8 layers.
DX7 - 6 operators FM (phase modullation, actually) allowing complex algorythms

Synclavier can do much more, but DX7 is better at FM.

I am talking about Arturia emulations.

Then you'll say the same thing about the hardware. I've owned a DX7 and TX7 and Dexed gives me all I want......

Maybe so, but for me the sound was just so quiet even on full whack

I have that version, that's why I'm asking: not sure if it'd be redundant picking up the DX7 vst as well (dexxed notwithstanding)

Synclavier is head and shoulders above DX7. Oh, it can do things DX7 can’t even dream to do - and the case is not vice-versa in any stretch of the imagination.

Could you expand on that a little? Or a lot?

What you can do within the partials is incredibly versatile and unique, specifically being able to add as many frames within a partial to change the harmonics, tuning, etc - in a manner DX7 simply cannot do. Of course, there's the resynthesis and sample components, as well (that I don't really even use). Like most of the crap we read here, this crap is purely my opinion. Maybe I just find Synclavier much more intuitive to explore and create, whereas DX7 pretty much stays within the box (with exceptions) of the standard FM machine that the original is - of which I prefer Octopus or FM8 (the latter of which using the noise yields neat musical responses). I would suggest watching Arturia's 2nd tutorial video, and then check out the update videos. Oh, one variable DX7 has that I wish Synclavier had are the MSEGs and LFO/sequencer. Maybe in an update. That would a wonderful update for Synclavier.

Edited to say: This actually encouraged me to spend more time with DX7, and I have to take back my vice-versa comment. There are definitely things DX7 can do that you can't with Synclavier.

Dexed is less of a cpu hog. , simple install, no bells and whistles and it’s free ..
Oh. And it sounds great ... win/ win situation
Eyeball exchanging
Soul calibrating ..frequencies

I already own the Arturia and I'm pretty well covered with cpu throughput, I just want to know if Dexed is actually better in sound quality.

Digital synths are, you guessed it, digital. With the same patch they sound the same unless you want to degrade the sound quality with emulations of a bad DAC... The huge advantage of Dexed is, that it supports MPE and thus you can play it expressively in a way even a DX7 with breath controller could never do...
The huge disadvantage is its UI compared to Arturia. Arturia also added some other extras... But MPE is the reason I more likely load Dexed...
