1) Is this combination possible from the technical side?
2) Are there hosts that support this?

Update:
These DAWs already support it:

Bitwig 4.2
Ableton 11.1.1
Carla
Blue Cat's PatchWork
Blue Cat's Axiom
Reaper 6.5.2
DP11

1. Yes.

2. I'd assume all M1 hosts would, seems like it would be more effort to remove it. Initially Steinberg made some noise about this being against the license agreement, but never followed up with it.

M1-native hosts with VST2 would be Bitwig, Reaper, and DP11. There may be others I'm unaware of.

I wish Logic supported anything but the awful AU...

We have a preview of Blue Cat's PatchWork available (for customers) that is M1-native and can load VST2, VST3 or Audio Unit plug-ins.

I was able to build a native M1 version of Icarus (VST SDK 2.4, VSTGUI 3.6). To make it compile a few tweaks were necessary. It runs fine in Reaper in native M1 mode.
Unlike what Steinberg claims it is possible to compile VST 2.4 plugins with native ARM code. VST2 plugins run fine on M1 Macs.
Steinberg's decision to drop VST2 support in Cubase on M1 Macs is a pure marketing decision.

Carla (and its sibling Ildaeil) run native on M1 and has vst2/vst3/lv2 hosting (Ildaeil only LV2 at the moment, but is the same engine).

Yeah, I have a whole host of VST2 plugins, running natively on my M1 Mac with Ableton Live 11. Some of them are newly released with big names behind them. I’m not exactly sure why some developers (f.e. NI) decided to scrap their VST2 versions.

Audio Damage Continua and Discord 4, Generate by Newfangled Audio, Knifonium, Atlas 2, Borsta, Arturia Fragments and Pigments, etc etc

Maybe NI is going to be eaten by Yamaha and needs to get in sync with Steinberg. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Just a guess...

As to the original topic, all of the major ones except Cubase. :hihi:

I have a feeling ALL VST2 licences will be pulled soon. So, CLAP, it will be!

I’m not exactly sure why some developers (f.e. NI) decided to scrap their VST2 versions.
It's planned obsolescence from Steinberg's side.
Steinberg's VST3 SDK support(ed) compiling VST2 plugins. But Steinberg's support for this is buggy and they intentionally made this as difficult as possible. The complete SDK is a mess and fails compiling in many places. As a result, most developers fail/give up with building VST2 plugins when they use this SDK.
JUCE is the only economic workaround. But porting a plugin written with VSTGUI to JUCE means rewriting large parts of the plugin.
Furthermore, Steinberg does not longer give out VST2 licenses to new developers.

That's great to hear.
Apart from the many bugs it has Steinberg's VSTGUI needs some tweaks to compile on M1. I was able to compile with VSTGUI 3.6. Will check out 4.3 today.
