Saw Sleepytime Gorilla Museum once where they used a 16-mm movie projector to do something similar.

each one had magnets to hold them together an one component.

you built the projects on what amounts to a cookie sheet...I got this around 4th or 5th grade, I even made a kind of theremin controlled by a photocell...as a kid that was indeed my favorite toy.
in fact this might be the theremin...that thing that looks like a face on the bottom I believe is the photocell...they called it an organ though.
