There are many variations on what is called Ambient Music.
Some is washed in reverb, some is fairly dry.
Some is done with all synths, some is acoustic.
Some uses old school hardware synths, some digital synths and samples.
What I always found interesting was Enos classic recordings.
The use of synthesizers was often secondary to other instruments such as guitar, piano, bass, voice and sometimes classical instruments.
Ambient music can be produced a wide variety of ways, with any kind of instrument.
