What? It's a simple fact, much as nobody is going to be moved to tears by any of the music I/we make. As I said, that's not what it's f**king for.

Look through the thread and it's obvious that 90% of the songs people have chosen are absolutely made to elicit that kind of response. They don't have to be the greatest songs of all time, they just have to connect with you and, while pretty much none of them would ever get a tearful response from me, for a variety of reasons, I can well understand how they would from a lot of other people. But EDM or EBM? It's simply not going to happen (unless maybe you're off your tits). I think possibly you need lots of melody, not incessant, pounding rhythms.
i need Help wrote: Tue Jan 31, 2023 7:24 amlol jk jk, but not only do I produce “EDM”*, I produce and listen to Trance none the less! That’s like being the kid that “the kids who get picked on” pick on lol.

But I do also listen to a Smorgasbord of other stuff on occasion.
I used to listen to a Smorgasbord of stuff when I hadn't found the music that really works for me (which is not the kind of music I/we make, because that didn't exist at the time).
I listened to mostly Punk music in high school.
Sham 69, The Damned and The Lurkers or that hideous excuse for Punk they made in the US?
as a kid grew up on Pink Floyd/Motley Crue/Guns N’ Roses/other rock in that vein from my dad, Contemporary Christian Music from my Mom
Which, I hope, you immediately dismissed as belonging to a different generation. If either of my parents liked a piece of music, it was my bonded duty to despise it. It is every child's duty.
So I don’t feel I live in a musical vacuum, but even listening to the above, as I mentioned before, I don’t like get teary-eyed or have a squirt of dopamine in my brain that would make me feel happy or whatever.
My exposure was far broader than that but it still didn't help. I had everything from Little River Band and Wings to Alice Cooper, Supertramp, Sweet and Rick Wakeman but none of it really connected with me. If you'd asked me at the time, I'd have undoubtedly said I love music and proudly shown you my collection. It was only later I realised that I didn't love that shite at all.
*Yeah I know EDM ≠ Trance and that there’s 172,028,963,001 different sub-genres of “Electronic Music”
No, you got it right, it's all EDM, just as New Model Army and The Eagles are both Rock bands.

What are you talking about, everything from No Rest for the Wicked through to Strange Brotherhood was released on a major. All but The Love of Hopeless Causes were on EMI, that one was on Epic (Sony).

Closest to it I can think of is Portishead or maybe something like that Rabbit In The Headlights track, but it's all too slow to dance to in a club so shouldn't really count.

Would be a nice little aim for the monthly composition competition on here, make some high tempo loud beat EDM/EBM that makes people actually feel something without the aid of chemicals.

Are you safe?

I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

I think there's a sadness to some deep house, techno and a few other sub genres that's very appealing. Like some of the first and second generation Detroit influenced stuff. I've definitely got teary while not off my tits to things like this:

Except the connection mostly comes from the vocal, which most EDM doesn't have. The first song I posted, I Love the World, is a fast, energetic song but the vocals make it connect at that emotional level in a way the music by itself could never manage. The second song I posted, Nothing Touches, would be 99% as effective with no instrumentation at all, just the vocal. And again, with the vocals, it's in the melody, not the rhythm, which also puts EDM behind the 8-ball.

I think you mean no-one touched you like that, which is why he's the only one in gaol.

I could kind of imagine it if it didn't have all that happy stuff over the top of the sad pad part. As it is, I'm thinking you were probably very sad before you put this on and it just took you over the edge.

I'm sorry. No kid should have to experience being touched by Gary Glitter.

And to make matters worse, he's now set to be freed from prison.

The Flame by ATB - the lyrics just kill me.
Gone by Madonna (seriously)
The Center of the Sun by Conjure One (Slow Version) - if I had one song I had to listen to the rest of my life this would be it. 12 minutes of epic bliss.
This Bitter Earth by Dinah Washington (Max Richter Mix) - This always makes the hair of the back of my neck stand up. I'm all about remixes & I think Max Richter is a freaking genius & this mix is no different. It was played at the very end of the movie 'Shutter Island' & I think I probably want it played at my funeral.

I won't post any YouTube links because every time I click one on here I get redirected to watch it on YouTube. (I don't think Google likes my Adblock even though they let me install it as a Chrome extension. All about that ad revenue.
