Before you go all Marie Kondo, you might want to try capturing all your stuff at your favorite settings. That way you won't feel like you won't ever have access to something cool but maybe not something you'd use all the time. Also, you could have the entire thing in a silent form for when playing loud isn't an option. I've been using the NAM stuff and I've been pretty blown away at how close it is and it's totally free.

They're working on a gear repository site so you won't have to use FaceBook to find stuff, but if you just want to capture your own stuff for your own use, you can just go to github.

Yeah, I mentioned that Neural Amp Modeling software a post or two ago — that’s a good suggestion to capture stuff digitally before selling any of it. That NAM software seems pretty impressive especially since it’s free and open source! Thanks for the handy links.

The rig I’m trying to set up would require at least 3 and possibly 4 or more amp models and stereo effects and the interaction is key, I think it would max out most computer systems, and I just prefer to put together actual physical rigs for home, but it would be a good way to save something useful and useable from any equipment that I eventually sell, so I will keep that in mind!

I have so much crap and I really need to just quit buying and finalize something and then sell the surplus. I’ve had a lot of this stuff for decades but I’ve been gathering new stuff for a couple years now, probably won’t do too much this spring and summer, but should be able to put together a new personal studio next fall or winter hopefully.
Heh.....I resemble that remark. Yeah, I have literally tons of stuff from decades of feeding my G.A.S. addiction. It was already bad enough, but COVID was just the excuse I needed to fully indulge myself. Kinda like Clapton sitting at home in front of the TV with a big bag of heroin for three years....LOL!! I need to force myself to revevaluate my needs, have some shootouts....how many dirtboxes does one human need? I loved those 1st edition H&K Tubemans. Has a couple meself....their Cream Machine was fun too. Back when my studio was still all analog I'd often record some guitar tracks directly injecting a Tubman or a Rat pedal into the board. Even when miking a real amp, I'd usually record a second clean track directly from a DI for later old school re-amping. These kids don't know how easy they've got it! In some ways I miss old school analog tape multitracking. I love the sound of natural tape compression on drums and bass. For a while, before I went totally ITB, I ran the studio as a hybrid.....drums and bass to tape....then into the DAW for overdubs/mixing/mastering. Yeah, I miss some things about analog tape....but editing with a razor blade is not one of them. :D

I don’t want to regress that far either, but I do still have a really nice Akai 4-Track [GX-630D.SS reel to reel] that I want to put back into service.

What I’m thinking is track with all the amps going, great layered finished “studio” tone to groove by but in a general purpose non-tweaked kind of way, but always record a DI signal to DAW right after the main drive(s).

Pignose amps are actually very handy for this because the output on the back labeled something like “preamp out” is actually just another tap off the output transformer (the speaker keeps playing when something is plugged into that output too)… and that’s another thing really cool about Pignose amps — the older ones are germanium transistors and they all actually have output transformers! They have another transformer too that sort of does phase inverter duty from what I gather (they are class b push-pull amplifiers). Sometimes harsh on the ears but can pump pure mojo into microphones.

Anyway, track with the best in room tone I can muster (these little amps will be isolated and mic’ed plus there will be DI available from each amp if needed and I will hear the amp mix through monitors so I can experience them in their full glory without the in-room screech), DI to DAW after drive, then arrange and edit in the computer, re-amp through the appropriately tweaked for the tune wet-dry-wet effects & amps and mic to tape. No razor blades required (in theory). Worth a shot anyway, I loved that tape machine.

Man, I thought of so much more gear I have too… didn’t even touch on the several rack mount tube preamps that are around here somewhere, new TC Flashback 2 x4 with the mash “expression” switches for delay weird stuff, etc.

Yeah, all those dudes who are selling all their amps or hardware modelers might regret it when they try to do something trickier than a fuzz into an amp with some reverb. Computers are awesome, but even the fastest CPU can only do so much.
