I'm working on an animated series, and I've been cranking out songs for the sound-track. All are kind of meant to be retro music from fictional bands.
Firstly, a Misfits inspired horror punk song.

An early '90s style skate punk song (think Bad Religion) :

Lastly, death/thrash metal this one is basically aping Sepultura around 1990.

All the drums are drum machines/samples, but I played all the guitars, the singing is me except on the last song, it's the Voices Of Rage Kontakt instrument.
Cheers.

I don't know much about these genres but these tracks sound pretty convincing to me. I think "What Will Be" is a great song.
It's funny that someone made a Voices Of Rage Kontakt instrument and convenient for you so you don't have to destroy your vocal cords.
Keep us posted on the animated series.

Fun songs and very well done. There's a repetitive sound in Vampire's Kiss that could be toned down a bit. I'm not sure what it is but was nice when it stopped for a little around 0:50. What Will Be is pretty spot on for that 90's style, although that repetitive sound snuck its way in.
What'd you use for guitars on each of these? Amp sims? Overall, really good stuff. Interested to learn more about the animated series.

Cheers. I always just use Amplitube. Probably just all Mesa Boogie and Marshall modelsguitarmiester wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 12:48 pm Fun songs and very well done. I think the sound you're talking about in Vampire's kiss is an electric piano. I was trying to make a Misfits inspired song so just straight ripped off what they did in Die Die My Darling. I didn't necessarily copy the mix, just the idea of a repeating staccato synth.

Cool. Cheers... Whoops. Missed that I had a couple of comments.Frantz wrote: ↑Sun Sep 17, 2023 7:19 pm I don't know much about these genres but these tracks sound pretty convincing to me. I think "What Will Be" is a great song.

I feel a little guilty about cheating using the Kontakt instrument vocals, but it's not a super serious release. I have been able to do death metal vocals in the past, and took a shot at this, but I wasn't getting a good enough take, and I'm a proper singer, so I don't like doing it as it's not good for your throat.
Yes, so it's a series about 2 room-mates. One listens to pop and electronic, the other listens to punk and metal. So just whenever they're hanging around in the living room, there'll be music on.
It'll still be a ways off.
Grrrrr... Weird image host. Here's a link to a screen grab.

That was a lot of fun! Your Danzig impression is hilarious!
Though actually, your song and vocal delivery sounds more like Michael Graves Misfits to me.

Voices Of Rage is pretty seamless. I would have never guessed that came from a sample library, though I'd still rather hear your own send up of cookie monster vocals, for the comedic value.

Using Voices of Rage took a lot of work to make it sound natural... It kind of would have been much easier to just do it... But now that I've got it, I think I'm going to get maybe 6 songs out of it.jamcat wrote: ↑Fri Sep 22, 2023 2:46 pm That was a lot of fun! Your Danzig impression is hilarious!

No, I don't really sound like Danzig/drunk Elvis... I tried, but it didn't really work, but I just went with what I got. I like '90s Misfits. My real life band plays 'Dig Up Her Bones'.

Really impressed with the drums, especially on the Sepultura song! Love making punk and metal drums with samples

Cool. Cheers. It's just the Ugritone death metal drums. I really like their libraries... and most of them I got for $5. I was just trying to kind of copy the mix on Arise... again, I wasn't trying to do it exactly, just kind of in the ball-park.janebjorkJensen wrote: ↑Sat Sep 23, 2023 4:36 am Really impressed with the drums, especially on the Sepultura song!
