Typical pop harmonic progressions with strange lyrics. Double tracked acoustic guitar -- recorded with a mic! Orchestral percussion. Orange vocoder layered with some of the vocals -- I keep forgetting how to sing. Electric guitar into TH-U and the UA Fender amp emulation. I misspelled the song name in the mp3 file.

edit: fixed misspelled file name

Hmm, why didn't you correct the typo? Is "misspelling" part of the concept?

About the song: Beautiful composition, well sung with a lot of expression.
Lots of dynamism, power and emotion - really good. Of course, there's still a lot
of room for improvement in the mix—but the most important thing is the
composition itself. And it's fantastic! :tu:

Thanks for your feedback enroe. I'm glad you noticed the dynamics. One of the tough parts of singing for me is hitting the correct pitch at higher volumes. So it takes a few tries before I get something "good enough".

The misspelling isn't part of the concept. After I uploaded, I realized the mistake. But I was having problems accessing archive.org to fix it. So, I just left it. But I've fixed it now.

As enroe mentioned, great composition and agreed that’s the biggest thing. I really like the lyics and I don’t usually listen to lyrics. Mix wise, I think the vocals are competing too much for space. Are you using ADR or micro pitching? Is that Alterboy with MicroShift?

Thanks for your comments. Is there a particular freq. range where you hear the vocals being masked?

I don't think I used ADR. I kind of use Melodyne for micro pitching. I'll layer the pitch shifted version with the "raw" recording. As long as the raw recording isn't more than 30 cents away from the pitch corrected version, it provides a nice phasing effect. I use a few other techniques for the vocals. Sometimes I'll just layer two different vocal takes (normal double tracking). I might also sing an octave or 5th up and add that in too. Sometimes I'll use two takes and apply a short reverb to one of the takes at 100% wet and layer that with the other take.

Haha, that bit right at the end!

Love the Dinosaur Jr stylee production on this - nicely raw, but retaining control.

As others have said, the vocals are a bit indistinct in parts, so probably a bit more automation in the loud parts to up them a bit? Probably overall could do with them bumping up a bit too.

There's a lot of differently effected vocal parts going on (I know the feeling...) so there may be a case to have one 'main' vocal as a constant and have the others more as 'spot effects' so there's less up and down and variation going on, but possibly that would lessen the charm of it a bit....hmm.

Anyway, enjoyed it as is. After all, tis the indie rokk, imperfection is part of the deal!

Lots of contrasts on this one. Changes in volume, intensity, mood, instrumentation create a pleasant and varied listening experience. I enjoyed the melodies on here, and the vocoder was a blast.

Re: The ending vocals - are you old enough to remember Pinky and Perky (not the animated version, but the subversive original series featuring puppets from the 1960s)?

Good work :)

Genetic_Junk,
Thank you for the review! Now your song: Intro sounds pretty trippy and mellow. Then gets more intense. Plenty of surprises. Parts of it remind me of the Beatles. Reminded me briefly of the Smashing Pumpkins, at least once. Part 60's psychedelic. Never a dull moment. Pretty interesting for sure. Good melodies.
Cool recording.

Thanks! I guess I like vocals with a bit a friction in the mix. Your point on creating a more cohesive vocal sound is very true. I had the same thought but was not sure how to get there, other than starting over with the vocal processing.

Excellent song! I'm not sure what it's about. Maybe the geometry teacher drank too much at lunch and starting giving a bizarre lecture frightening the kids?

The production is extremely raw and dynamic. I like it this way, warts and all. It is the opposite of most modern stuff which sounds like a collection of loops. This is full of life. Great job. :tu:

Nice one. Versatile progression and arrangement. Sounds good.

Thanks! Those are some great references. I really enjoy the first three albums of the Smashing Pumpkins.
