Acustica Audio has announced the release of Thing, a synthesizer suite inspired by the Roland Jupiter 8.
Thing is Acustica's first synth plugin. Known for their effects plugins, they are aiming to bring their expertise in convolution and analogue modeling techniques to a range of new instruments called "Marea". Acustica audio's new technology that the company calls MUST, or Modular Unified Synthesis Technology, will power the range.
The Thing is comprises two versions of the instrument:
- THING 8 (TH8): With eight voices, TH8 closely emulates the Jupiter-8's architecture and sound. It boasts two VCOs, cross modulation, sync, a highpass filter, a resonant lowpass filter with 12dB/Oct and 24dB/Oct slopes, an LFO, two envelopes, and an arpeggiator.
- THING 5 (TH5): TH5 streamlines the Jupiter-8 experience with a simplified workflow and five voices. It retains the core character of the original while offering a more immediate and accessible interface.
Both versions include features not found on the original hardware, such as sub-frequency control, a "superstereo" mode for widening the sound, and an "age" control for dialing in vintage character. The Thing also boasts an effects section derived from Acustica's effects plugins, with over 500 presets to get you started.
