Mokafix Audio recently released seven new distortion VST effect plug-ins for Windows (6 commercial and one freebie). They have all now been updated to v1.1, along with Mokafix Audio's freeware NoAmp! plug-in.

The seven new effects are designed to bring back vintage transistor and opamp based distortion tones. Some are based on classic effects (Rectifuzz, Muffin Rider and Metal Clone), others on rare wild effects (Companero and Brass Buster), and some are multi-purpose distortions that can fit a wider range of uses (Kung Fuzz 68 and EZ-Driver).

Metal Clone is a freeware, the other plug-ins cost €9 each and are also available as a bundle for €36.

Companero is an emulation of a vintage "companion fuzz" stomp box. Featuring Mokafix Audio's auto-biasing transistor algorithm, Companero is a wild fuzz distortion that "intends to wake up the punk inside".

Rectifuzz is an emulation of the famous "Blender" stomp box. It lets you mix the dry signal with a fuzzy, rectified, distorted signal that gives a thick distorted sound suitable for heavy rock or funk if used with more subtlety. Featuring Mokafix Audio's auto-biasing transistor algorithm, this effect fuzzes and rectifies the signal to create a messy, fuzzy, ringy sound that you can blend with preamp dry signal to get that thick gnarly tone that made this effect a classic.

Brass Buster is an emulation of a vintage "brassmaster" stomp box. Featuring Mokafix Audio's auto-biasing transistor algorithm, this effect creates a very special distortion with a lot of fuzz and some ring modulation, and lets you mix it with the dry signal. This mixing feature makes it especially useful for bass guitar or even keyboards. This effect is an old classic and brings back the richness and weirdness analog effects were famous for.

Kung Fuzz 68 is an advanced version of Kung Fuzz. Inspired by an advanced transistor fuzz, this effect lets you tweak the fuzz tone more than the first version of Kung Fuzz. The bias knob lets you set the amount of self-biasing and the contour knob gives you the possibility to smoothen the clipping. This makes Kung Fuzz 68 the ideal fuzz effect for any material, from electric guitar to bass guitar or even synths.

Muffin Rider is an emulation inspired by a famous fuzz stompbox effect. All stages have been emulated to provide the most authentic tone. It provides a bold fuzz sound with loud sustain that made the original a classic effect loved by generations of guitar players.

EZ-Driver is an emulation inspired by an analogue overdrive stompbox effect. EZ-Driver provides a warm distortion that lets your guitar character pass through. The Drive knob has an influence on both distortion and tone, which makes this effect versatile and gives it a vintage feel.

Metal Clone is a freeware emulation inspired by a Metal analog Hi Gain stompbox distortion. All stages have been emulated to provide the most authentic tone. Featuring a complex gain stages chain and parametric EQ, this effect provides a heavy tone to bang you head on.

Changes in the version 1.1 updates:

  • All FX now feature oversampling. Oversampling can be set to x1 (no oversampling), x2, x3 and x4 speeds. It prevents undesirable digital artifacts on higher notes and increases general harmonic content consistency. This makes the sound closer to analogue devices.
  • An envelope was added to prevent DC clicks on loading. Now the sound fades quickly from dry to wet on loading.
