Steinberg partners with Sony CSL and updates Backbone to 1.5 with new AI feature

Steinberg has announced the release of the 1.5 update of Backbone, the latest version of its unique drum re-synthesizer plugin. The key feature in this new version being DrumGAN. This is a recent development by Sony Computer Science Laboratories (Sony CSL) that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to make unique drum samples.

Backbone is a percussion and drum design instrument that lets you make complex drum sounds for any style of music in new ways. Users start by putting up to eight samples on top of each other. These samples can be broken up into separate tonal or noise elements. The individual layers can also be put back together using tools that are easy to find and use through the user interface.

By adding DrumGAN, Backbone 1.5 now lets you to generate sounds through the use of artificial intelligence and neural networks. Generative Adversarial Networks are used by DrumGAN to create new drum sounds with just a few smart parameters. Similar versions can also be made by looking at samples that already exist in your library. With this new AI-driven technology, Backbone users can now take their sounds into uncharted territory and make a wide range of signature sounds that have never been heard before.

Senior Marketing Manager Florian Haack says:

The cooperation between Sony CSL and Steinberg is a great example of how AI can be used in music production to drive creativity while making everything easier. The ability to generate new samples with DrumGAN for kicks, snare or cymbals, or analyze existing samples and further re-synthesize and reassemble the components gives producers unprecedented flexibility to design new sounds. And, thanks to the user-friendly interface, Backbone users can now harness this new AI-powered technology in a straightforward way.

Backbone is available through the Steinberg Online Shop for 149 euros or 149.99 US dollars. With the release of version 1.5, Backbone is currently available at a 40% special offer discount until the end of July 2022. The update to version 1.5 is free for users who already purchased Backbone.
