Silkworm is an easy to use "SuperSaw" style virtual analogue synth with built in gate sequencer and delay unit, plus powerful filter, modulation and dynamic controls.

Features:

  • Choose from sine, saw, ramp, triangle and pulse waveforms.
  • Control over thickness of sound and over spread in stereo image.
  • Band limiting filter using two 12db filters in series for a very characteristic sound.
  • Ping pong delay with filter built in.
  • Separate LFO for vibrato (preset with adjustable aftertouch level).
  • Assignable LFO for modulating filter, bandwidth, pulse width, volume and panning.
  • Mono and poly modes (mono is not only good for producing great soaring leads but also helps save CPU cycles).
  • Various play/dynamic controls.
  • Simple but effective sequenced gating effect that can be synced to external (host) clock.
  • Very easy to program and capable of more than just trance sounds.

I loaded Silkworm about an hour and a half ago to re-familiarize myself with it before writing this review. Well, just like the first time I tried this synth, I got sucked right in and started creating presets and forgetting about my original plan to just reacquaint myself with the controls and features etc. Not all synths have this power over me but there's something about this one that piques my interest and just begs to be tweaked.

I'm not going to get too technical with this as that's not my thing anyway but I do know good sounds and Silkworm has em. Silk(y)is as good a description as any to describe the sounds this synth produces. But wait, it gets some pretty nasty sounds too! Think of Silkworm as a beautiful woman who can get pretty nasty at certain times of the month but the difference being with Silkworm, you have absolute control over it. Yeah. That's it. :)

Anyway, the layout is very easy to navigate and tweaking is intuitive. The filter scheme is quite unique and you can get some very interesting colors out of it especially when routed to the LFO modulation section. The "Thickness" control really fattens things up as advertised and the gate does just what gates are supposed to do.

My only wishes for future versions of this synth (I hear there may be a Super Silkworm on the way?) would be a lower CPU hit if possible and the delay and LFO both sync-able to host tempo.

*Note: there is no documentation with this synth and considering it's a freebee, I chose not to diminish the total score by entering a low rating for documentation. If it were a commercial product, that would be different.*

Back to tweaking.
