The API 525 is a faithful reissue of the iconic 1970s compressor/limiter, celebrated for its unique character and musical response. This 500 series module captures the essence of its vintage predecessor, bringing a classic dynamic processing tool into the modern studio. The 525 is a feedback-style compressor, a design that "listens" to the output signal to determine the amount of gain reduction. The operation of the 525 is distinct and straightforward. Instead of separate controls for attack, release, and ratio, it employs a multi-function "Ceiling" control. This four-position rotary switch simultaneously sets the threshold and ratio, offering progressively more aggressive compression. The module also features seven selectable release times, allowing you to tailor the compressor's response to the source material. A unique and highly useful feature is the integrated de-essing function, which uses filters to make the compressor more sensitive to sibilant frequencies. The 525 can be operated in either Compressor or Limiter mode and includes an IN/OUT switch for true hardwire bypass.
