The Earth Piano by Roland is far from my favorite piano VSTi, but it's usable. It lacks the dynamic range and expressiveness I'd expect from a top-tier piano plugin. Interestingly, the dynamic range is accessible within the plugin when manually entering velocity values, but it doesn't translate well when performing with a controller. The velocity curve feels off and is non-adjustable, making it difficult to achieve the same expressiveness through live play. For reference, I'm using the KeyLab 49 and KeyLab 88 controllers from Arturia, both MK1 editions, and I don't experience this issue with any of my other piano plugins—and I have quite a few.
If you're looking for a responsive, nuanced piano with a rich, resonant low end, this one may fall short. However, it does deliver a loud, bright tone that could work well in pop-oriented tracks where a strong presence is needed.
As part of the Roland Cloud subscription, it's a nice addition, adding value to the bundle. But if I were paying specifically for a piano plugin, I'd likely look elsewhere for something with more depth at a similar price point. Additionally, I've noticed occasional lag and unpredictable response that doesn't seem to be related to latency, which can be a bit frustrating during more intricate playing.
