Gem Modula is the latest edition to their Gems series of mixing/mastering plug-ins, that emulate classic modulation units such as the Dimension D, Solina Ensemble and SPX90.

Modula includes three iconic units in one plug-in:

  • Dimension - The Dimension unit offers a very soft and organic modulation. It was the go-to unit for vocals in the 80s and 90s but it can also be used on a full mix to increase the space perception without adding reverb. Its input section has a very musical harmonic generation when pushed into saturation.
  • Ensemble - The Ensemble circuit was included in a line of string machines, so it is particularly suited for synth and pad sounds. It can greatly enhance stereo depth on strings and soundscapes as well.
  • Symphonic - The Symphonic unit is the classic digital chorus of the 90s. It has a 3-voice modulation scheme with sinewave LFOs for heavy modulations. It was the Zakk Wylde and Mike Stern chorus, but it has been heavily used on vocals and synths as well.

Along with emulations of the original units, Overloud also extends the features of the original hardware and combines the flexibility of the digital world with the character of analog processing:

  • Input Saturation - You can push the input stages of the units into saturation to drive their super-musical harmonic generation.
  • Built-in EQ - With the built-in parametric EQ you can sculpt the tone of the wet signal without the need of complex external routing.
  • Stereo Width Control - You can change the amount of the stereo width, from mono to double the original width.
  • Dual-mono Mode - With the Dual-Mono Mode you can process the left and the right channels separately with different settings in order to increase the stereo depth. Parameters can be linked individually using the custom link panel.
  • Envelope Controlled Parameters - All the main parameters can be dynamically controlled by the input envelope. The effect will "breathe" according to the level of the input signal. This is particularly useful in Electronic Music. For example, the modulation speed can increase during the transients. Or the amount of effect can be decreased on louder passages to increase their clarity, while keeping a sense of wider space on the softer parts.
  • Customize LFO Shapes - Thanks to the analog modeling design, it is possible to virtually mod the original circuit and change the LFO and filter's behavior while keeping the character of the original unit. You can experiment with using LFO shapes to change the motion of the modulation, or add resonances to transform the chorus into a flanger, for example.

plugin: Gem Modula.

Developer: Overloud Audio Tools.

Website: https://overloud.com/.

the overloud audio tools team has developed this new plug-in called Gem Modula.

based on 3 of the most famous chorus in history, the dimension based on the Dimension D.

Known as much for its stereo enhancement and incredibly spacious sound, .

The ensemble unit dedicated for keys, synth and pads and the Symphonic.

based on the spx 90 one of the most famous chorus used by zakk wylde in his albums.

with ozzy osbourne and by mike stern all of this in a single plug-in.

First impressions:

as soon as I opened the plugin I was particularly impressed by the graphic quality and the details that the overloud team offered.

I immediately noticed that in addition to have these three units there are an input saturation, an eq to sculpt the signal without having the need to use other units.

Another aspect to consider is the possibility of having the main parameters controlled by an input envelope.

Ease of use:

By ease of use I mean that the interface makes it easier to understand the rack units that the Overloud team wanted to bring to users.

The factory presets also help the user to interact more effectively with this plug-in, which offers more than 30 presets.

Features:

Dual mode: Left and right independent settings to create a wider stereo sound.

Input stage saturation control.

Stereo width control.

A - B Test.

Built-In parametric eq.

All the main parameters can be controlled by the envelopes.

Stereo width control.

LFO shapes can be mod so you can have fun experimenting changing the motion of the modulation and the resonance.

How does it sound?

As a guitarist, having an spx90 in my studio, I immediately tried to do an A/B test between the plug-in and the real deal, copying the settings of the famous preset 15 of the spx90 and believe me they sounded the same.

I immediately played a few songs from the album no more tears and was pleasantly surprised by how similar the sounds were, and by "similar" I mean:

the depth of the chorus.

the touch response.

Verdict:

Whether you're a guitarist, keyboardist, singer or producer, this plug-in gives you the chance to add a touch of the 80s and 90s to your sound or mix.

Among the many aspects I enjoyed the SYMPHONIC impressed me a lot.

The quality and fidelity with which the team has worked to give the user a product as faithful as possible to the real deal is impressive.
