The Fairchild 670, the Pultec EQP-1A, and the Pultec MEQ-5 are among the most sought-after pieces of hardware gear in audio history. Jack Joseph Puig is among the most sought-after producers and mixing engineers in the music industry. When JJP requires the "perfect sound", he turns to these studio legends. Now, Waves has precision-modeled these rare pieces of hardware and captured every detail of their rich harmonic complexity in software form in the Jack Joseph Puig Analog Legends Bundle.

PuigChild 660 & 670
Compressor / Limiter

Throughout the vinyl era, the original Fairchild 670 compressor was ubiquitous: From the recording studio to the record lathe, the Fairchild was renowned for its advanced compression techniques and incomparable sound. Waves captured every distinctive nuance of Jack Joseph Puig's Fairchild 670 along with every detail of its rich harmonic complexity.

PuigTec EQP-1A
Program Equalizer

The Pultec EQP-1A is renowned for its unique ability to boost and cut the same frequencies simultaneously, thereby creating a resonant shelf. The PuigTec EQP-1A is a replication of Jack Joseph Puig's original hand-crafted unit, heard on dozens of popular recordings from artists including Weezer, Black Crowes, and Panic At The Disco.

Featuring:

  • Unique resonant low shelf boost.
  • Digidesign Icon support.
  • Up to 24-bit, 96kHz resolution.

I found the installation to be pretty straight forward once I figured out that you can download the entire software package and install only what you want to. Easy. Once you have registered it with waves it shoots your authorization to iLok and you can go through the wonderful process with iLok. I do not consider this a fault of Waves but I sure do wish that they would have used syncrosoft. I do not favor iLok.

One thing that I would like to point out with this software is just how little CPU it takes on a modern computer. For how good it sounds it is VERY efficient. My experience with it stability has been no issue at all. It feels total solid. Every time I open a plug-in from them I fear that the iLok will freak out or some problem will happen but now a few months later I am beginning to feel a little more relaxed.

I have been using these side by side with UAD and would like to make some comparisons.

The work flow with the Pluigchild is MUCH better than with the Fairchild. It takes me a fraction of the amount of time to get a good result. It is much cleaner and offers harmonic distortions. So I am told. It does sound more "excited" when pushed.

The EQ's again are less distorted sounding. But here I feel it is more of a matter of taste. The UAD plug-ins offer more distortion and a sense of fullness. This is very useful as well.

Both taste great!

This review is a little quick and dirty but I am seeing less and less reviews here so I thought I would try and start.
