Komplexer offers both virtual analog synthesis and wavetable synthesis, with eight onboard macro controllers.

Featuring classic synth sound powered by three oscillators, two multimode filters, four ADSDSR envelopes and three LFOs, Komplexer also has the ability to import Waldorf microQ sounds. Courtesy of the macro controllers, presets can be modified to suit every taste using just eight parameters. This VST instrument also affords users unrestricted access to all of the sophisticated synthesis engine's 400 parameters. Features such as the advanced arpeggiator and LFO 3's synchronizable user-specific waveform serve to create soundscapes that adapt automatically to the given song tempo. In the 16x16 modulation matrix almost every parameter of the Komplexer can be accessed.

Features:

  • Virtual analog software synthesizer.
  • Wavetable synthesis.
  • Imports Waldorf microQ sounds.
  • Eight macro controllers.
  • Up to 256 voices.
  • Unrestricted access to the sound synthesis engine.

This is perhaps the most powerful soft synth in my arsenal. That includes Rapture, Dimension Pro, Massive, FM7 & 8, Absynth 4 and a bunch of others.

I bought it for the wavetable stuff, but found that the VA stuff is pretty impressive as well. You can layer four sounds on top of each other and get some really strange textures.

Reviews have called this a synth geared towards electronic music. However, that seems to be too limited a description.

THe user interface is about as easy as you could make it for something this complex.

I like the fact that the LFO controls are on the main page. The modulation matrix is incredibly powerful and includes an aritmetic section. I have only used that for inverting an lfo to send a pair of 180 degree out of phase signals to filters.

There are a number of big knobs for controlling things like macros that can include multiple changes to the sound.

You really need a controller with this thing.

My only problem has been getting it to work with Novation Remote Zero and Sonar 6.2.1. That seems to lock up occasionally.

I cant really rate customer support because I haven't needed it. I cant give it a 10 if I haven't tried it nor a 1 either. It would be nice if this wasn't in the rating.

The successor of this great synth is Waldorf's Largo.

People should be aware this was made after Walforf XT (1998) and Waldorf Q (1999) which were both 100% software, and also coded by Stefan Stenzel. Although Komplexer is the acknowledged predecessor to Largo, there are some things to know. Largo cannot import wavetables nor MicroQ patches. Komplexer can. Largo has modeled oscillators (vs. wave playback). It is plainly stated that Waldorf Q modeled the Pulse's hardware oscillators. Also, a brilliance setting of 63 (half) in Largo will give a Q signature. There are many ways to make Largo shrill, metallic, and brash. Like anything else, the price you pay for having more options is more responsibility. Don't let it "play you". Largo get's a bad rap I think sometimes, because people just call up presets.
