Kill The Top

Multiband Compressor

VST2, VST3 (Windows) | VST, VST3, AU (macOS excluding Apple Silicon)

KTT is an improvement to the legendary OTT (Over The Top) compressor. By doubling the frequency bands and including a chained exciter, KTT is even more aggressive while providing more control.

As a result, KTT provides a rich and punchy sound, with bright and sparkling trebles, punchy mediums, rolling bass and deep subs.

KTT is a 6-bands upwards/downwards compressor. Multiband compression divides the frequency spectrum into different bands to compress them individually. Upwards compression is boosting the low-intensity dynamics while downwards compression is reducing the high-intensity peaks.

Having more bands means having more control towards the audio spectrum while leaving the broadband headroom untouched. KTT also features a chained 12AX7 dual-triode exciter which helps to enrich the signal with harmonics synthesis on top of the compression.

A broad range of controls are here to help you tailor the sound you need:

  • Dry Wet allows you to blend the original signal with the one at the end of the processing chain, while Out Gain controls the output volume.
  • Downwards and Upwards knobs are mapped to the compression ratios of the downwards and upwards parallel compression for every band. All of the ratios are tied differently to those two knobs, in order to preserve the characteristic sound of KTT.
  • Attack and Release control the speed of the feedback detection circuit. A high attack results in intense transients, and a high release brings a pumping effect to the sound.
  • The Analog switch allows you to choose between a digital RMS detection circuit and an analog diode/capacitor peak detector, in which the attack time gets slightly scaled by the release time.
  • The Exciter knob sets the amount of harmonic excitement that will be applied band-wise, in respect of the 12AX7 vacuum tube distortion.

Not a successful multiband compressor.

I was disappointed with KTT. OTT's controls are infamously mysterious, but this takes it to the next level.

Despite the quotidian interface, it's often unclear what exactly is happening to the signal, with no control over the individual bands, and the controls do not seem to do what they say.

And there only seems to be two settings: kind-of-off, and BLASTING IN YOUR FACE. And not in a fun way. There seems to be some kind of audible gating happening; the tails of signals are plagued with a progressive chopping effect, and the tail gets completely cut off. I would expect the opposite with aggressive compression, leading me to believe that there is something else going on behind the scenes.

The bottom line: it just doesn't sound good. OTT has a pleasing quality, often like an aggressive exciter. But KTT just brings cloudy artefacts to the party. I'm calling the cops on this one. Stay away.

Interesting plugin, very aggressive. We can feel that the goal of this beast that was to overcome OTT. It's done well, the sound color is really nice and suit EDM genres. as it is really heavy, I don't know if there is any case where I would use it more than 20% wet, and be sure to increase the downwards knob as you increase the upwards knob if you don't want too much saturation. Last, it sounds really different if your input volume is either very low or very high which can be a useful feature.
