The Sound of Piano One comes from the Yamaha C7 concert grand, a true workhorse in the professional piano world, appearing on famous concert stages, in international competitions and in prestigious music events throughout the world.
By utilizing the Sound Magic Hybrid Modeling Engine, Piano One offers both the Realistic Sound of Sampling and the Playability of Modeling. Hybrid Modeling provides an instantaneous feeling - no delay - and a truer and richer sound than can be created with either sampling or modeling alone.
Piano One is also designed to be extendable or upgradable in future. If the user is a serious musician, he/she need to consider better sounds and features. Sound Magic also provides this opportunity. When they feel the sound is not enough for them to use, then they can choose other pianos inside Piano One. What's more, there are instructions inside Piano One to help its users to choose.
- Sound Magic Hybrid Modeling Technology.
- Built-in professional Reverb Engine simulates resonances with environment and soundboard, adding extra realism to the sound.
- Faster load times. Smaller hard drive footprint, less memory and less CPU usage.

Gotta say, I wasn't that impressed with this one. Of course it's free, so the value for the price is excellent. Kudos to Sound Magic for giving it away, and I hope it's brought some customers to their full products. But - I find the sound quality pretty strange - so I'll talk about it from that standpoint.
Like others have said, the release sound is unrealistic - there's an optional "REL VOL" setting that actually plays a different sample upon release of a note, a sort of higher pitch flutey squeak, which when you boost it to the point that it's audible sounds really strange to me. When I first heard the plugin I thought something was wrong with my system. If you turn that off by setting reduce "REL VOL" to 0, the notes still sound strange when they end - the volume cuts off very abruptly. You can set "RELEASE" to be longer, which controls the volume envelope, but you lose expression and control of when the notes stop - and still it tapers off unrealistically. Even when you don't release the keys, the notes don't sustain very long - e.g. if you play a chord and hold it, after about 6 seconds the notes will all abruptly end at different times. It's like the volume envelope just abruptly jumps to zero once it's below a certain threshold.
Aside from that, the actual sustained body of the notes sound warbly - it's not a smooth note, there's some pulsation and a bit of a bubbling effect, maybe from compression in the samples, or noise reduction on the original recordings - not sure.
So overall, when it's dry, the sound comes off really strange to me. You can bury that in reverb to cover it up, but to me that's just sort of sweeping the sonic problems under the rug.
Aside from sound quality, the UI is a little plain. I had a lot of bugs and display glitches with the 64-bit version. The 32-bit one functioned correctly though (this was using FL Studio 10).Read more

This plugin is the "Zebralette" of the piano market. When companies produce these cut down freebie versions of their products we all win. The company gets goodwill and familiarity with it's products, and we get free stuff!
I've been using Piano One for all my practicing, improv and composition needs for the best part of a year, and the sound is on the whole very satisfying. Now, you can practice and do bare-bones composition on polysynth sounds, but for some reason, you just can't beat the experience of sitting at a piano when it comes to teasing ideas out of your subconscious.
This piano is even good enough to be used on professional tracks semi-naked, with one caveat - the release - as has been pointed out in the other review, is pretty unrealistic. You can fix it a bit by dragging up the release slider, giving a more realistic release length, but the *shape* is still wrong. Mostly you can fix this with reverb (using the reverb that comes in the plugin or an external one), but still, it's the fly in the ointment of an otherwise near-perfect freebie, and the reason I'm giving 9 instead of 10.
The look of the plugin is pretty janky, but the interface has some good controls (velocity curves for example, very useful for extracting different piano styles from your playing). Their paid plugins have much nicer atmospheres to them and it seems fair that they'd cut back on this a bit in the free version.
I'll definitely be checking out their other piano products with the hopes of buying them if they can build on the quality of this one.Read more

One of the best free pianos around, probably better than many commercial piano plugins or sample libraries.
Sound - it has an excellent open and clear sound. Many modeled pianos miss a certain "brilliance" of the sound as well as some sampled pianos (probably recorded with darker microphones). This one sound like a real good piano, how you would hear it from near (while playing on a real piano).
Interface - a simple interface with very self explanatory controls. You can tweak the sound, add some impulse based reverb, open/ close the lid, control dynamic response (velocity curve), etc...
CPU and RAM usage - as mentioned by developer, low usage of both. Can run on slower or older computers without chocking your projects.
On the downside:
- the release is a little unrealistic and can be a turn off for people who are used to play real pianos. You can fix it a little with the release slider, but not make it good. In a project you can hide the problem by using the sustain pedal. Still, if you care more about the sound than response, this is the free piano you'll ever need.
- interface could use a more inspiring design/ colors/ better knobs and sliders graphics.Read more

Very good review, I've used it on a couple projects and agree with every point made.

I can't use the presets neither in Version 1.1 nor 1.2.
What is the prob?
If i try to load them in Cantabile or my Daw I got this Message:

You need to download Version 1.3 and Presets for 1.3 to solve this issue
7 May 2013 at 6:21pm
Do the notes always cut off after about 10 seconds or do I maybe have an old version? I downloaded version 1.3, installed it, then downloaded the patch for v1.32 and substituted the .dll file - is that all I need to do?
Thanks for any help.
22 July 2012 at 4:18pm
Everytime I try and use this VST it says cannot find any instruments. Help me? :)
23 July 2012 at 3:02pm
It would be better that you can contact our customer service about your issue :)
27 July 2012 at 2:55am
I downloaded a version that says 1.3 but it will not load the presets on this page.
what I downloaded was from the supreme piano one page http://www.supremepiano.com/product/piano1.html
the file was PianoOne13zip
It works with the default instrument, but I'd like to try the others
27 July 2012 at 5:18pm
I think at one point, right after 1.3 came out, there was either a problem with it or the download was actually 1.2., even though it was labelled 1.3---I had the same preset problem. The 1.3 version on the site now though is definitely 1.3 and works for me with all of the presets. I use the 32 bit version bridged in my 64 bit DAW, since for some reason the native 64 bit version (especially on the release) sounds kind of odd.
That being said, this a really good sounding piano --especially for free!! Props to the Dev.!

27 July 2012 at 5:30pm
Hmm...I assumed that once they got the right 1.3 up there it stayed up there....but maybe not :(
27 July 2012 at 6:01pm
Is there another download connection? Maybe that would have the correct version?
27 July 2012 at 6:22pm
OK, I just re-checked the labelling on the actual dll file currently in my VST folder (Windows 32 bit version). It also says 220.127.116.11 even though the zip said 1.3. BUT....all the presets load and are working properly for me in Studio One Prof. 2.0.6.
27 July 2012 at 10:01pm
When I load the presets downloaded at:http://www.kvraudio.com/product/piano-one-by-sound-magic/downloads, I get the error "mismatched version"
I also downloaded the new Piano One Version 1.32 Patch - Upgrade Only there.
I'm using Cantabile 2.0
3 September 2012 at 3:57pm
I guess it's a Cantabile issue because when I used Piano One in Sonar it worked flawlessly and loaded presets without any issue.
27 July 2012 at 10:15pm
If my recollection is right, I think the only preset bank that won't work would be the original "kvrer" one, which was superceded by a newer one on that same page. All the rest of the preset banks should work.

I downloaded all the different Piano sets from KVR here but they don't show in Piano one, version 1,32. I got FXP files from the sets, inserted them in Piano One's Folder, but they do not show as presets in the VSTi, only the Default, which sounds awesomely Great, thank you, and a few included numbered Patches that deliver a strange volume boost noise when I play them (Ok, maybe because it's a demo) that I could silence by moving the Attack slider each time but I see no changes in the parameters and the sound is the same as the Default.
I'm using Acoustica Mixcraft Pro Studio 6 as my DAW and all my VSTis 32 bits load and play perfectly.
My PC is: Intel i7, 870 on Windows 7 64 bits, with 6GB DDR3 RAM.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to install them so that they show and load in Piano One? A special folder (re-) naming, a specific location where to put them?
Thank you so much for any help and for such a great product!
21 August 2012 at 4:15pm
You have to manually add each preset into the patch #. The Preset always
appears as fxp file which you have to use load instruments option (maybe
it has another name in other DAW)to load them. It will not automatically recognized by the plugin
22 August 2012 at 4:01am
Thanks for answering shane1980 but how can I do that?
Acoustica Mixcraft pro 6 doesn't load fxp files, only fxb and I cannot see the presets in PianoOne as I try to load them, only the default 1 and 2 (apart from the Patches).
I don't know how to manually add each preset into a patch.. Sorry for my ignorance..
23 August 2012 at 7:28am
I've downloaded piano one too but i don't know how to install it.
Do you know how or where i can find some instructions?
25 August 2012 at 1:32pm
Alex, do you have a VST folder? Yes? The whole PianoOne13 folder has to be copied or moved into that VST folder. I don't know what DAW you use (I use Mixcraft 6, I created mine) but I believe every DAW has a VST plugins Folder, be it installed by default by the program or one that you already created.
Sorry cannot help you with the other DAWs. Help should be on its way soon...
2 September 2012 at 2:00am
This is EXACTLY what happened to me when I first added the patches. So I opened "Piano one" inside my DAW and manually assigned the patches (I downloaded) to the numbered (empty) patch banks under the "presets" drop down menu.

I have downloaded Piano One and installed it in my VST folder. I have tried using it in a couple of different DAWs but can't get any sound. In both cases I can see the keyboard keys move in response to the events sequence but the sound is completely dead. I haven't had this issue with the various other VST instruments I use and I can't work out what I am doing wrong with Piano One.
Can anyone help please?
25 August 2012 at 1:15pm
Try both versions (32 and 64 bits, not together though). Sorry, can't remember which one I installed but it plays beautifully in Mixcraft Pro Studio 6.
I guess you installed the whole folder (PianoOne13) in your VST folder, not only the dll.
25 August 2012 at 1:31pm
I'm still in the world of 32bit but your point about the location of the whole folder may be the problem - I can't remember whether I put the whole folder in the VST folder or just the dll. I'll check it out when I get home later.
29 August 2012 at 9:54pm
Anyway, if you're using Mixcraft, only 32 bits VSTs are usable. I have Windows 7 64bits, but I believe in the VST world, it works accordingly to your DAWs' capacity. Some can use 64 bits, some 32bits only. As for any other DAW, check in the "About ...." section or ask around..
Glad it helped you! :D

Hey there the update patch still appears to be version 1.0 so can't use the other presets
2 September 2012 at 6:24am
Hi hope someone can assist with this issue. I have installed the Piano 1 component into library/audio/plugins/Components folder and run SPRuntime.
When I open Mainstage it reports that the plugin failed to load. When I select authenticate I get the following error message:
"VERIFYING CUSTOM UI

Is there a way to fix this error?

Hello can someone help me I downloaded this VST (lates version 1.32) and installed it... I'm using FL Studio 10... I'm not getting any sound.... Any ideas??? HELP PLEASE!!!
16 November 2014 at 4:37pm
I think it is pretty obvious - we need some kind of soundset (I think it is about 150 MB) to work with Neo Piano mini. The supremepianos site's link to VST redirects here, but its link to the soundset is not valid. So we have a problem until Sound Magic fix their bloody site!.
8 September 2012 at 11:01am
I too downloaded 1.32 from the link on KVR above, and get no sound. Using Reaper 4.261 as my DAW.
20 September 2012 at 2:26am
It seems everything is pretty much for Windows users. Does anybody know if there's going to be any updates for Mac AU users ???
21 September 2012 at 6:03pm
It appears that only the 32-bit version of this plugin is receiving the latest updates on the PC. Is that correct or am I doing something wrong?
24 September 2012 at 3:14am
Piano One fails AU validation on my system. Logic 9 32bit running on OS X Lion 32bit. Anyone else seeing this?
15 October 2012 at 6:07pm
I have downloaded several versions and tryed them. But no sound. Either in Sonar x64 and EnergyXT. Is there a problem on windows 7 x64 plateforms ? Is there any official forum where bugs are reported ?
28 October 2012 at 8:29pm
I have had good luck running the 1.3 program in Windows, as well as most of the patches offered above here.
What is the 2.0 version, 1.32 version, and Special Edition? It is mentioned that they are updates - how do I apply these to the 1.3 version? Their folders shows a .dll extension inside, but when loaded they look the same as the 1.3 version but with no sound. And no "hidden" parameters are visible.
I'm not sure what these updates are, and would welcome any help in using them properly. Thanks!

I really like the sound of this thing, but I'm having a problem.
Max Volume is making the instrument get louder instead of softer as I turn the knob down. Even the least loud position (all the way clockwise) hits too hot in my DAW and overloads the fader before the audio leaves Piano One. I can hear distortion when I hit a lot of keys hard, even with no other plugins inserted and the fader turned down to compensate; thus the distortion is happening all inside of Piano One. My instinct is to turn down the volume of Piano One inside the plugin but there is no way to do it. Am I missing something? I'm using the AU in Logic.

1st of all sorry for my bad english. Nice to be in this discussion.
I have installed everything and i came up (maybe) to a solution for the "Not-playing-presets"-Problem.
I use Cubase as my DAW. with F11-Key you can get your VST-Instrument Manager. Here You choose "Piano one" and then click the right icon. Choose "Import FXP/FXB" and select the Preset-Sound, you want to play.
In my DAW it works fine, but I can hear, that every (every) sounds have a "hard end". Try to play a note and hold it (for example as You would do at the end aof a song. There is no fade out to zeropoint, but after 8 seconds the sound is "killed".
Another unnatural phenomen: Striking a Key, I always hear overtones allthough the sustain-pedal is not
in use. Anyone an idea? Is there an update? I use V1.32

I have no Problem running piano 1 on win XP. My question is: When You play a Key and hold it (as you would if Pressing the sustain Pedal): Can You hear a fade out to zero or does the "Sample"-Sound stopp WITHOUT fade out.???
3 December 2012 at 3:26pm
Hi, I think piano1 patches doesn't work on mac au, only on windows.
3 December 2012 at 6:33pm
The AU is useless. Gain control is still busted in both Piano One and Orchestral Strings. This is so frustrating. I'm dying to get my hands on working versions of these.

Ive been trying to get a great piano sound for ages now and i found these Audio Units.
I use Logic pro 9 and have 2 questions regarding presets........Are the presets compatible for Mac? And if so how do i use them?
11 January 2013 at 3:37am
I also had problems getting any sound from Piano One even thought it seemed to load OK and the keys actually moved when MIDI was coming in.
The problem was that I had put the dll and the resource files together in the same folder (Piano One) in my VST folder.
The solution? I pulled the Piano One folder out onto my desktop, opened it, and dragged the dll back into the VST folder. Then I closed the Piano One folder and dragged that back into my VST folder as well.
The same files are now in my VST folder, but the dll is not inside the Piano One folder anymore. Guess what? Problem solved. Hope this might help other users.
PS this piano sounds great.
17 March 2013 at 8:00pm
In sonar x64, only PianoOne x64 is making sound. x32 version works in x32 daw like Energy.
The problem is I can not load any new preset in x64, and the interface is more poor than in x32.

Any one have advice on how to get the presets to be recognized (or how to install them) with OS X vst? I use Live 9 and I can load up the VST but I dont have any options for selecting presets. I also have a windows install and it works perfectly fine (presets and all).
I have copied piano one and its presets into a single folder in the plugins folder. Do I need the presets in a special folder or something?
And I have downloaded the latest version of piano one.

I have encountered the same issue the first time I have tried it.
It's because you have installed an update (certainly the last update of course) BEFORE having first installed the initial version.
So, here is the procedure:
- First, delete your file Piano One.dll.
- Then check in you folder where is located "Piano One.dll". It contains a subfolder itself named "Piano One".
- Delete this subfolder named Piano One. Don't be afraid, You'll lose nothing. If you are afraid of it, simply rename it with other letters at the beginning or at the end. But I assure you that you'll loose nothing. The content of this subfolder is simply necessary parameters for the dll.
- Then install this version (unzip it entirely in your VST's folder) : http://www.supremepiano.com/download/PianoOne13.zip
Do not install another version for the moment!
Of course it will install Piano One and it will recreate the subfolder.
- Then relaunch Piano One in your host to try it. Normally it will sound, now! Yeah.
- And then ONLY AFTER THAT you will be able to install the last update! (for the moment it is this one, the "special edition" of 21 september 2012).
- Now don't replace it anymore when installing patches and banks! Of course you will install all the beautiful patches made for Piano One which are available in the "Banks & Patches" tab at the top of this page, but never replace again the dll until the potential creation of a future new update ! Beware !
Many people have the same issue that you encounter and that I have encountered. It was always because we installed the updates of Piano One without having installed first the initial version.
Since the resolution of my issue I really enjoy Piano One! At the point that it is one of my prefered emulations of pianos, making as well as very expensive commercial products.
27 June 2015 at 9:15am
I know im two years late lmao but thanks alot bro. Any chance you still have the update? Because its not on kvr anymore. Would be very appreciated.
12 November 2013 at 9:34pm
To all wondering about how to get the presets. Download them, place them in an easy to find folder. Now, I'm using ableton, but there is a small folder icon on the VST interface which, when hovered over, should read "load preset or bank". Click on this, then find your downloaded presets. Just click on them, and boom, you're set.
14 November 2013 at 4:39pm
I have tried to get PianoOne to work, but no sound comes out of it. Any DAW I have tried failed to reproduce a piano sound, though I have installed everything the way it should (and did that several times in several DAWs). Pity, I;ve been looking for some good pianos and the demo sounds great, but there seems to be something odd going on. Not even the default piano is there. Is there any sound in there at all?
14 November 2013 at 4:49pm
Have you done exactly as I had written here? :
19 November 2013 at 2:25am
I was very excited when I downloaded this and was surprised by the amazing sound it provides. However, there seems to be one fatal flaw. When I play the same note, twice in a row, the sounds stops between them to start the latter note, instead of carrying through. It becomes extremely distracting in pieces involving these repetitions of notes. Is there any way to resolve this issue? Or is it just a problem with Piano One?

I have Piano One on my desktop (windows vista) and it works just fine in FL Studio. I can't get any sound to come out of the plugin on my laptop though. The laptop is Windows 7 and I'm using FL Studio 11 for that as well. Any suggestions?
8 December 2013 at 1:04pm
See my comment dated 14 October 2013 at 7:13pm which is at the previous page. Have you made exactly this procedure on your laptop ?
This problem is so recurrent that it is really a mess and the developer does nothing to definitively rectify this situation. In fact, I think that he doesn't give a goddamn.
So while waiting for his infinite kindness, my advice is now to forget this plugin (good sound but too many problems with the installation everywhere) and to install another. There are many other good and even excellent free piano emulations in VST/AU. Here are some of the best:
- http://www.kvraudio.com/product/cvpiano-continuous-velocity-piano-by-tascam/ (in the discussion at the bottom of the page I have indicated the direct link to download it, and Tascam is for many years one of the greatest companies in music technologies, hardware as software).
- http://www.kvraudio.com/product/mrtramp_by_gsi/ (GSi is also the developer of VB3, the best Hammond B3 emulation ever, but not free, is costs $50).
- http://www.kvraudio.com/product/ticky_clav_by_bigtick/ (the best free clavinet emulation in the world!).
All these products are excellent piano emulations and they all are free! I have chosen here acoustic piano emulations and also electric piano emulations and even a clavinet emulation.
My advice for everybody is now to forget Piano One, because there are other free great emulations and as long as his developer continues to ignore our recurrent problem with the installation of Piano One we can prove him that he is loosing many, many, many customers.
8 December 2013 at 4:59pm
Got it. I was afraid it was the issue. My desktop is messed up so I needed to transfer all my old sessions over, some of which included Piano One as one of the sounds. I'll download one of these other pianos you linked though and use the ones I have as well. Thanks a lot.

So... HAVE YOU READ ALL MY ANSWERS ABOVE ABOUT THIS CHRONIC PROBLEM ?

Poorly written software. I have been a developer for 14 years. its not difficult to make software point itself towards a DAW VST folder with a choice of standalone before opening. Also clearly written instructions for 64-bit win OS & Mac. This should be labeled Beta to stop so many EUs pulling their hair out. lifes to short.

When i installed Piano One, i went to the VST folder in fl studio, and it worked, but how do i do it for these presets above? do i put them in the same folder? please help.

Hi, I downloaded Piano One ver 1.01 for windows 64-bit. I want to use presets, so i tried to install the 1.3 version, but it doesn't work. I substituted the 1.01ver .dll by the 1.3ver .dll and now i can't load this plug-in (i'm on Ableton). Is that because the version 1.3 only works on windows 32-bits or because i have to do something more ?

Hi everybody, .
I've just got a .dll and a .pdf files...
I'm afraid I can't test it, because I can't succeed in getting any free soundfile... It's obvious that a company show first their payable products, but even after looking for a free sound till the end I don't find anything. Is there a technical problem ? Is it really free ? The French guy that I am miss something ? ^^.
Thanks in advance, have a good day.

For this plug going right you need to have of course the dll but also a file named "Piano One.mse", wich contains the sound itself... But I remember having troubles finding it a few weeks ago. (I forgot where I finally got it). Have a good day.

Confusing, on YT I see a nice demo of Piano One. When I go to their site, they send me here to download, and instead of Piano One the download gives Neo_piano_mini, thats dóes react to my MIDI-keyboard, but doesn't give any sound in Ableton. The site then isn't clear, talks about piano sets you need*). Well, they try to lure me into buying they say. Will I pay over a hundred dollars to a site that doesn't work, with a demo that doesn't work where dozens of free VST dó work? Guess what?
(at about 21:15)
*) I start to think that this plug in is meant to have no sound, you have to buy the sound, this is only the keyboard interface.

Sorry for the stupid question but why I only see the mac and the 32-bit version available for download? Where is the 64-bit version?

I have downloaded a Piano One from Softpedia, and another from VST4free, and they both do the same thing: they play, but they sound chopped up, like half of the sound is missing. I have hosted the VST on Magix Music Studio 12 Deluxe for Windows XP, which I admit is maybe a little old and not really top of the line, so I'm wondering if you're supposed to have something more proper, something like Cubase, for example.

Hello I have just installed piano one.. and for some reason its not making any sound in the latest version of Logic X.. I don't know why this is not working? Do I need piano sets or something? Does it not get installed with the installer that was provided above? Please HELP would love to be able to see how good this sampling engine is..

Thank you for this beautiful free piano, its different with neo player, and much better then older versions of piano one. I have lots of expensive samples piano vsts including Ivory American concert D, Ravenscroft 275, VSL Vienna imperial, and lots of others, Personally, I play only Vienna and love to play this free piano. I will order very soon Steinway Thor. This link http://www.supremepiano.com/download/Piano1.rar posted here is valid.

The Piano1.ins file does not load from within Reaper. It apparently is an InstallShield related file but does not work on my Windows 8 system. I'm envious but not likely to pursue this VST any further due to the numerous other install issues flagged here in the comments.

8 on 10 for this ???
First the interface is ugly.
Secondo, it is a heavy download, so i waited for the top free piano on the web.
Ishhh! It sound like to talk with a hand on the mouth.
And the sound interval between the Do 5 and the Si 4 is weird.
Tertio.....forget it for garageband.
ok ok a good thing.
Thank you to don't let me fill up an account, check account, validate account, newsletters, download lock key, etc for a free product.
