Hello, I hear a lot of people using regular FL Studio type software and in their songs you can tell that their drums are samples since they are so complex. My question is where are people getting these samples? Do you have to pay for these VSTs, or are there free ones out there?

Not really sure what you're saying, but sfz + soundfonts sounds good.

No.
Many of them are eithr cut up drumloops (free EVERYWHERE via google search) (using flslicer) or theyre using also FREE sample packs. hard to find are GOOD emulations or varients of sounds produced by 808's and 909's respectively.
I would download soulseek (p2p)(not to pirate music but to get FREE, LEGAL sample packs of hardware drummachines). First google hit.

Ha, actually someone posted in my other topic about a site to get female vocals, and that site also has a ton of drum beats as well:

http://www.breakbeat-paradise.com/sampl ... vocals.php

Thanks!

It loads slow as hell though, must have some time of limit on that site since you can't even open more then 2 web pages until the download is complete.

People would be surprised at how complex synthesized drum sounds are! Most of the hip hop drums you hear now a days are synthesized.

depends on the kind of hip hop but i'd disagree and say that most hip hop is sampled from drum breaks from 60s and 70s records

I use DFHS - toontrack.com - 40gb drum library in FL Studio, all one shot samples, so no loops. I just program with FL's piano roll, and with a bit of time, its easy to program drums that are insanely complex and completly realistic.

(and yeah, hip hop drums are mostly programmed, but not very complex imo)

Perhaps this was true some years ago, but not the more modern hip hop.

Edit: Or should I say "rap", as i'd like to distinguish between the commercial genre of hip hop that is so mainstream compared to the underground, less mainstream hip hop. There is a huge difference now, the gap between the two continually spreads. Underground makes use of a lot more natural instruments, and it's a bit more complex than the mainstream rap right now.

To get acoustic drum samples try Findsounds.com. To get samples of classic drum machines try http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufacturers/ (http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufacturers/) Load them into a sampler and there you go.

there are several 'sample coops' nowadays, where you have to contribute samples to get samples.. it's a solution to the 'i'm giving info away for free and paying massive bandwidth because of it' trouble..

i have some drumsynths and samples on my homepage.

just rip all your cd's and spend a few days cutting out nice sounding one-shots. You'll be suprised where you can find good sounding drums, if you turn to your own music collection.

Any particular search terms you would recommend for SoulSeek - or any free packs you recommend? (for electronica/ big beaty type tracks)

Cheers
