lofi synth?

i'm just listening to some old mods and realizing that probably the reason a lot of their sounds are so different from what i create is that they are mostly 8-bit and lower samplerates..
so i ask - are there any vsti's that have an option to output at least simulated 8bit or low samplerate? i see quadrasid has lofi, but i would probly want something more flexible than SID emulation...
or what about a vst effect that does this..? is that what bitcrushing is all about..?
i know i could just sample some stuff at 8bit - but i would love the flexibility of a whole synth..

Sounds like bitcrushing to me, reducing the resolution of samples..

get the soundhack decimator plug, apart from the fragulator in Pluggo, this is one of the nicest sounding (ha!) bit crushers out.

the unique quality of mod music is also due to the type of effects applied and the mixing of the samples, not just the quality of either the samples or the eventual output. you might want to try using an emulator to actually use the original protracker, octamed, or s3m and others. you can sample the output and use it, but to do that you'll need to learn how to track.
alternatively there are a few pretty crap sounding modules for buzz, and i think there may be some vsts that implement a simple tracker.

A bit OT:
I have the impression that the SID is sometimes associated with lofi 8-bit (aliased) type of sound. But from my experiences (programming the SID on a real C64) it is very clean sounding. It has the features and the sound of a regular analog synth (as far as I know the oscs are digital, but I didn't remember someting like aliasing)...

MODs sound like MODs because when people sampled them, the original sample had, for example, reverb in it. Now that the tracker plays the sample, the reverb sound changes as the sample plays at different speeds.
To get that sound, try to create a sound with effects on (reverb/flanger/phaser/chorus) and then sample it (just one sample, no multisampling). Then play it with your favourite sampler without any additional effects.
Oh, and 22KHz samples also help. Just remember to put them through ANOTHER 22KHz samplerate reduction effect in realtime
