an fm piano or some tinkl-ey lead - saws barely detuned if at all, short attack, quick exponential decay. -also arp'd?
download efm's p5 simulacrum: comes with the original -5 presets which could fit the bill.
-think the 'like a virgin' lead/background.

EZ-Poly?
Or any synth with a sync option, really.
As previously mentioned FM is an option, FMheaven would get you the accurate sound, but I'm not too sure that many in the 80's used FM for lead work, unless it was little emebelishments.
What sort of groups sum up the 80's for you?

Take just about bass or lead patch and give the filter a slightly slow attack so the sound 'quacks like a duck'. That's the cheezey 80s sounds for me...
