Have a listen to this small clip. I'm trying to get the exact piano/synth lead sound. It's a Crumar, possibly a Spirit. At the moment I cant find a match. Can get similar but the sounds are generally lacking in something. Crumar's had a beautiful tone, and it's damned hard to find in VSTi. So, any ideas, or, is someone gonna knock up a Crumar vsti?

Steff, could be a long story, but I'll skirt round it ...
The tune is 'This Our World' by a Manchester synthpop band called Beau Leisure. The vocalist/guitarist/songwriter was my best mate, and Beau Leisure had some of the best pure synthpop songs you have heard. they looked fantastic, and were brilliant live. Courted by every major record label in the country, they were let down by crap management (the bass players dad!!!) and missed the boat. A classic tale, no doubt.
Half the band went on to become 'When In Rome' - who had a big worldwide hit with 'The Promise' in the 80s. The other half went into production etc.
I am the only person left with their archive stuff and most of it is so hook filled that I believe there is a goldmine to be had with some updating of the tracks. The Crumar sound - was vital to the band's identity. Anyway, just for you - here is the entire track ...

I did a search for Crumar on esoundz' website and it came up with "Vintage Voltage", but when I read the actual write-up I didn't see Crumar listed as an included instrument. Ask Squids over in the SR forum, he could tell you.Manc Chris wrote:So, the Crumar sound then? Vsti equiv?
Otherwise, I can't think of anything right off-hand.

You might want to take note that the Spirit was actually designed by Bob Moog for Crumar, so it might not really be characteristic of the 'native' Crumar sound, such as found on the DS-1/2, Performer, Orchestrator, Bit One, etc. The Spirit would probably sound more like a Moog.

Yep, knew that.ChipCurtis wrote:You might want to take note that the Spirit was actually designed by Bob Moog for Crumar, so it might not really be characteristic of the 'native' Crumar sound, such as found on the DS-1/2, Performer, Orchestrator, Bit One, etc. The Spirit would probably sound more like a Moog.
The Crumar Spirit did have a sound of it's own though, not just a 'Moog lite' - . As mentioned, listen to the lead synth/piano sound on that small clip. I can't get it anywhere.

I listened to the clip. That sound reminded me of something like a Prophet VS - wavetable/vector type synthesis. It was probably some kind of freqency modulation with the oscillators, which you could do on the Spirit if I'm not mistaken.Manc Chris wrote:The Crumar Spirit did have a sound of it's own though, not just a 'Moog lite' - . There is a free VSTi called "Augur" available here at KVR, which is essentially a remake of the Prophet VS. Its sound very much reminded me of that synth/piano sound in your clip. But it has very few presets. I downloaded a couple banks of 128 presets each which really opened it up. Forgot where I got them, though.

Great, I will give it a try. Does anyone have any ideas on where to get those Augur banks from?

The Crumar Spirit is one the best sounding synths ever IMHO ... we used to use one in my old band Marineville ... steve (the keyboard player) picked it up in a second hand junk shop somewhere in Yorkshire for £20 ... the guy in the shop thought it was broken cos he couldn't get any sound out of it (he didn't realise it needed an amp)... there was a one of those Yamaha Home keyboards in the same shop for more money cos it had built in speakers
i really don't think any VST can possibly compete with the Crumar TBH
