Also Rock Band video game drums used for midi and new monome 40h kits go on sale soon on their news page:

As a stand-in for my broken touchscreen I'm gonna get my bandmate a Wiimote today as she claims that she'll "be able to dance around while playing" them.

So be it.

how to use a Wiimote via bluetooth in WindowsXP
Using the software Wiimote for Windows
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
and the Bluesoleil Stack with a
compatible bluetooth device

Wiinstrument for Linux

Wiimote swings with OSC via Blender

More MAC OSC Wii

Glove PIE which I use with my P5 data glove works for Wiimote midi on Wondows

Wiimote Max/MSP patch for Mac
Thanks for the overview - I just bought Zebra 2 so will be making a point of getting my Wiimote knocking about with the 4 XY pads on it.
Fun stuff!

Jeez, how in hell did I miss this?

There's an update to the free Linux distro that this device runs, which can be used on your PC, too, which I just noticed over on Create Digital Music blog:
  • Audacity [the open-source waveform editor]

Burn is a cd burn app

DJ is IDJ for live podcasting ( i love this with a mic)

Drum is Hydrogen [the simple but fun software drum machine]

Mixer is the Gnome ALSA mixer [for mixing virtual channels of audio on your system — something not nearly as functional on Mac or Windows]

Mixxx 1.6 beta (rips with the touch screen grabbing the tracks and faders)

Record is Ardourino (Ardour is so awesome) [the open-source DAW]

Sequencer is Qtractor (another great app)

    Synth is amsynth

Upload is an ftp app [so you can upload your tracks]

    Zynaddsubfx is another great synth

$999
  • AMD Geode x86 500mhz 256RAM 2.0USB processor (this was due to overwhelming request for more memory and the ARM is limited to 128)
    Prototype will have a 7.0″ TFT LCD 800×480 widescreen 16:9 panel/monitor

A YouTube video:

And a blog

If this thing had a touchscreen I would at this very moment be robbing a bank and moving to a former Soviet republic with one in my valise.

You should check CDM more often, they started covering it ages ago :P

I have to admit that the price is pretty impressive, naturally people could argue that you may as well get a laptop and have even better specs etc but they forget that you're getting the small-form portability plus touch screen which you are not going to find on a small laptop except maybe at some ridiculasly high price.

Mmmm, I'm so tempted. My problem is the difficulty in getting all my windooz plugs working on Linux.
Wonder what the latency would be like.

I check CDM every day, but I only found out about it relatively recently.

Certainly I can't afford it, but it means that wireless audio and a touchscreen can't be too terribly far off, and certainly the idea of getting Win VSTs onto a Linux system is going to happen, and when it does we'll all wave bye-bye to dumb-ass Windows and not even have to deal with the treachery of Vista audio.

These look particularly intriguing. I'm mostly curious about the Laser USB PC Keyboards; theoretically, GlovePie should work with these, as well as with the "keystroke samplers" -- which I'm guessing have less latency...

I'm betting you don't really need a flat surface--for creative applications--all that's probably neccessary is to "interfere" with the beam in various discreet ways, like an intricate D-Beam.

Once comfortable with Keystroke controlling (PC Keyboard to MIDI, samples, or OSC), one can make the next leap to "Speech Recognition" controlling--imagine reading beatnik poetry and having tenor sax spat out along side it!...at this point our latency is up to 1-3 seconds no doubt...

ALSO, a helpful "keystroke to midi" app is "Samchillean" --though it's mainly a live transformational system where keystrokes can displace pitch intervals by varying degrees--"pitch selection by relative means" as the author puts it--this is fascinating stuff which can be valuable as an aid in improvisation as well as composition.

I imagine it's just a matter of time before there are bands and solo artists using all these things--to "novel" effect at first, but there's no reason they can't be applied professionally.

Synaptics Touchpad hacked driver to support multitouch
(scroll to the bottom and go to Page 1 for the download, this page is all the videos)

Now you can use multi-touch gestures with any old Synaptics touch pad...
how can we get this to cooperate with VST GUIs for automation performance?
