Best free synth

Oatmeal is my fave. So flexible.

Might not have a true analogue oscillators, filters and what-have-u, but that's fine by me.

The default skin was a bit awkward as I recall, but I use a bigger, more clear one.

Charlatan is great too, if a little limited (but that's sometimes a good thing!)

Keep meaning to check out Podolsky, but haven't yet. From word of mouth it sounds good...and it's u-he, so that's a mark of quality in alot of people's eyes - I won't dispute that (only reason I haven't considered buying Diva is that my computer can't handle it well enough!)

I still use Crystal every now and then. Getting less and less these days though. Still - not a bad shelf life for a freebie!

I think this page can be very inspiring, as you will find a lot of free synths on that page (or betas), and you can find a big list of tracks that showcase the potential of these synths.

Charlatan and the free synths from u-he are pretty impressive!

Agreed with those. Two of the few free synths i use besides a huge amount of commercial ones.
TAL BassLine is quite cool too as well as Martin Lüders PG-8X (Roland JX-8P emulation).

My favorite free synth is Tactíle Sounds Substance. That opinion also seems to be based on the fact that i participated in beta testing, adding a few features and doing a large amount of factory presets for it.

Recently i also used Elektrostudio Model Mini and am very impressed by the sound:

I hate these threads. This is how my free synth collection grows to stupid sizes.

So far I got Charlatan, Rez, Texture, PG8X, Synth 1, Crystal, Glitch, MinimogueVA. This is only because I haven't gone back into my collected data from years ago and installed things like XWOF, Karnage, Motion, Lizard, Flea, Cygnus.

Already too many synths in my vst folder. I usually just grab Synth 1 too. Well, until I got in last minute on the Z3TA+ deal and got that one for free and registered. Now I grab that one as much as Synth 1.

What does best even mean? When I started to use plugins I tested most of those recommended free ones, but sooner or later the deficits in terms of sound quality are just too big to ignore. That is why there are few free synths that can really be used professionally, mostly hand-coded ones. Most SE and SM synths are just not good enough, especially older ones that don't use the latest modules.

No offense to anyone, it is nice of anyone to offer something for free. I just don't think there is more than maybe half a dozen free synths that can be called professional.

How did you get Z3TA+ for free?! That is one of the few synths that is actually worth the money. Have been waiting for some sort of deal, but didn't see any, not even before Xmas
