Spicy Guitar is free.
I got a knockoff Fender Strat for $40 at Guitar Center. It was cheaper than any guitar plugin.

Do you already own Kontakt? If so, there are many excellent guitar libraries (e.g., Orange Tree Samples, Efimov).

The best most realistic guitar patch will sound like a harpsichord if you don't play it with "guitaristic" voicing, articulation, intonation etc. And if you do have a way to play or edit it, a mundane guitar sample can be really convincing.Pericorp wrote:Hey guys is there any VST with realistic guitar sounds? Like Kontakt or Nexus for the piano? I can't find anything like this :/
I didn't see these sample sets mentioned in the thread, they are excellent http://www.ilyaefimov.com/products/guitars.html
Personally I don't think anything beats simply playing guitar parts with a guitar. Too many things are just so simple to do, natural, instinctive, even accidental, which turn out to not only be really hard to voice on a keyboard, but also tend to be things that you wouldn't think to do. Just my opinion though, and even though I said that, I have a couple of songs where I double guitar parts on a Roland synth which has nice enough guitar patches and a convincing strum arpeggiator.
I think a really great strumming arpeggiator might be more interesting than a vsti or sampleset.
