From what i gathered here or elsewhere, seems to be the case. I think some guys doing Ambient music use it as well. lot of studios bought it too, its good to have in house as its a one stop shop for most sounds.chk071 wrote:From what i gathered here or elsewhere, seems to be the case. you get some bands in say metal bands who want some basic synth line, choir or somesuch, then its just an easy option.
(yes there are better, for decicated sounds ie orchestral, but for use as above its more than useful)[and artists who would be using more dedicated instrument sounds would probably already own them]

I seem to remember that the predecessor to Omnisphere 'Atmosphere' was big with the trance crowd, but since then we have had the onset of wub wub fart noise genres which have made Omnispheres sound dated in terms of electronica at least, which i guess is why they brought out the spotlight preset bank. It all still sounds very 90s though. I'm looking forward to version 2.5 and its new analog collection. It's what Omnisphere is best at.wagtunes wrote:I know there's no way to determine this, but I wonder what the breakdown is, genre wise, of people who buy and use Omnisphere. Love how the KVR debate has shifted from "Omni is a ROMpler" to "Analogue is what Omni is best at". Over 1,000 new analogue patches coming in 2.5....lotus2035 wrote:I seem to remember that the predecessor to Omnisphere 'Atmosphere' was big with the trance crowd, but since then we have had the onset of wub wub fart noise genres which have made Omnispheres sound dated in terms of electronica at least, which i guess is why they brought out the spotlight preset bank. Again, any attempt to confine Omni to just being about a single purpose or genre will look kinda daft. Its fabulous for ambient of course, as it is for experimental film, pop, retro etc etc. The clue is in the name - OMNIsphere.
Incidentally, I think the much maligned EDM Spotlight soundset is absolutely not Omni's strongest selling point. Although there are some great patches in there, the tagging was so poor its actually quite hard to find them, and some of the harder in-your-face stuff feels more like its just there to counter the prevailing view at the time that Omni can't do hard-edged. I think there's a little bit of a gap in the market there for a really stellar, large, third party EDM bank to make the most of Omni, which Spotlight doesn't. I'm aware there are a ton of EDM banks out there, really I mean grade A patches made by genre-specialists and aside from the old Plugin Guru's Toxic dubsteppy bank I'm still not really aware of any. Interested to hear of any contenders though.

Atmosphere is still strongest point in Omnisphere at least for me and few folks I talked to, but that was ages ago, we now have way more options and quality ones also, back than that wasn't the case, same goes for Trilogy, Trilian was the same too, but we got so many cheaper and good options for basslines, it somehow got redundant, Spectrasonics is getting out of touch a little with new market, at least they have way more competition these days.lotus2035 wrote:I seem to remember that the predecessor to Omnisphere 'Atmosphere' was big with the trance crowd

Undeniably true that there is more competition now than when Atomsphere came out, and of course that's true for everyone. I don't think there's such a thing as a "must have" when it comes to synths, there's too many good choices.Zexila wrote:Atmosphere is still strongest point in Omnisphere at least for me and few folks I talked to, but that was ages ago, we now have way more options and quality ones also, back than that wasn't the case, same goes for Trilogy, Trilian was the same too, but we got so many cheaper and good options for basslines, it somehow got redundant, Spectrasonics is getting out of touch a little with new market, at least they have way more competition these days.lotus2035 wrote:I seem to remember that the predecessor to Omnisphere 'Atmosphere' was big with the trance crowd
But Trilian and Omni for me represent huge leaps over their predecessors - if your only exposure was "ages ago" it might explain a lot. I think what happens is that once something revolutionary comes out, anything after that is in some way disappointing as the quantum leap has been made and can't be topped. Omni 2 is light years ahead of Atmosphere, but its all been incremental gains. Its rather like Any Star Wars Movie After The First - the first one changed movies forever, and people keep harking back to it. Now in truth its kinda old, creaky and vanilla, and yet in our minds - and those of every director of the franchise since - its the one to beat, because it had that impact that no others have.

Most recently my partner/colleague (video guy that does trailers, commercials, weddings and etc) got it based on some You Tube videos, majority patches we liked were from Atmosphere library actually, go figure.noiseboyuk wrote:if your only exposure was "ages ago" it might explain a lot.

No, that's the thing, they show handful of best patches, that's why he is quite disappointed with it.noiseboyuk wrote:Must have been long videos with 7,500 patches to go throughZexila wrote:Most recently my partner/colleague (video guy that does trailers, commercials, weddings and etc) got it based on some You Tube videos, majority patches we liked were from Atmosphere library actually, go figure.noiseboyuk wrote:if your only exposure was "ages ago" it might explain a lot.

Since this is the de facto current Omnisphere thread - there's a new one usually every 3 months that more or less says all the same stuff from all the same people as the previous ones - seems as good a place as any to mention that I just read on social media from Spectrasonics that Omni 2.5 will be out at the end of the month.

The name is deceptive... it gives that impression... but there is a lot of synthesis stuff it cannot do. A more accurate name would be Semispherenoiseboyuk wrote:Love how the KVR debate has shifted from "Omni is a ROMpler" to "Analogue is what Omni is best at". And it is a Rompler... lots of Romplers have extensive synthesis capability.

The rompler tag is the myth that simply will not die. When the tag "rompler" applies to anything that has a sample in it (which is where we're at now in order for it to still apply to Omnisphere for the purposes of the pointless debate so beloved at KVR), it becomes meaningless.

I think Rompler (not a negative term, just a descriptor) accurately describes Omnisphere... A large and proprietary sample library is the centerpiece of the instrument.noiseboyuk wrote:The rompler tag is the myth that simply will not die. Serum can load a sample in the noise oscillator... it isn't a Rompler.
