Hey folks, I'm taking on an Industrial rock/metal project in the vein of NIN and was hoping someone could help me find the best VSTi or DXi synths for this project. Freeware if at all possible.

my recommendation: check out nin.com - he's got webcam pictures up. Just get one of each of what you see in the photos, that should do the trick. It's expensive, but it'll give you that sound!

Haha... Well, hmm...
I'm not going for the exact sound...
Also,
Does anyone know anywhere I can get any free
.wav samples to incorporate as well?

There's plenty of great freeware synths that'll do you nicely for industrial, here are a few:
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/313.html
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1002.html
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1231.html
And you might find this very useful as well:

Also, there's a forum (not to detract from the mighty KVR forums mind you) that specializes in this sort of electronic music, which you may enjoy:
http://www.darksonus.com/
Hope all that helps.

hi !
I would Advice you to buy Analog Synth, more or less I think NIN sound is so good because of the Analog Synths!
Check out Dirt-Cheap DIY (do it yourself) Modular Synths
http://www.paia.com/
http://www.ele4music.com/
$500 of investments will move you closer to that sound. But still don't forget NIN has resources to get to that sound. !

PS YES, yes I like burn my fingers, assembling stuff !

That list has two synths that emulate game noises and doesn't mention Synth1 or polyIblit. What a crock!JackDark wrote:Also, there's a forum (not to detract from the mighty KVR forums mind you) that specializes in this sort of electronic music, which you may enjoy:

Disspass138, more important than the instruments are the effects. You will need lots of distorion. Try TubeBaby and MDA BanDisto for starters. For the right kind of heavy sounds, try my little killerz [click the banner in my sig to find 'em] or polyIblit.

Thanks for the extra tips...
I'll be DLing those effects you mentioned
Along with others as well most likely...
I actually already snagged your killerz on a hunch...
I also snagged Synth1 already but I'll grab polyIblit as well.

Yeah, it also has UGO's Texture, SuperWaveP8, and ViValdi MX, which are great synths for industrial. And besides, take some gamey-sounds, pitchshift down, and layer them behind your gritty toms, and you've got some nice industrial percussion going on.BONES wrote:That list has two synths that emulate game noises and doesn't mention Synth1 or polyIblit. (As if it matters) Trent Reznor is also fond of software, Audiomulch in particular.alexibm wrote:I would Advice you to buy Analog Synth, more or less I think NIN sound is so good because of the Analog Synths!

He use to live off of TurboSynth also. As far as analog NIN style goes, the Prophet VS has always been one of his top 3 choices, so in that case, this VST may be useful too:foosnark wrote:alexibm wrote:(As if it matters) Trent Reznor is also fond of software, Audiomulch in particular.

He also loved the MiniMoog, and if you can't afford Arturia's lovely synths, then may I suggest this oldy but goodie (I STILL love this synth):
