This has been ported from the "Go-To Bass Synth" thread. With SeaMonkey's all-but-new Micron immigrating to my place, and looking at how much it has to offer, it makes me think that a hardware synth like it might offer better value to some than upgrading their PC. It has certainly made me wonder about the prospect of buying a cheap, used laptop to use live, instead of carting my workstation around Europe, as we will be doing this time. I think I could set things up so it would only need to run some drums and a couple of synths, the Micron could handle the rest.

My internet/work/everything computer is an iBook G4 800. It's pretty slow by today's standards, but for most work I don't care about processing speed - it's just email, web, programming, etc. The most intensive processing it ever does is displaying Flash animations.

I see there are 3 idiots already...
Music for me...The absolute only one other thing I use my DAW for is playing Spider Solitaire when I lose musical interest. Anything else I do on a PC is done on my old slow one.

My "day job" as as a software specialist at a state university. I have a fairly kick-butt laptop that work provides for me. I'm allowed to put personal stuff on it, and that's become my primary music machine because of portability.
My home desktop machine is about 2 years old... it's a pretty good machine, 'cept for the skanky SB sound card in it. In that machine, 2Ghz/1.25G RAM is enough for me for the VSTI I run, since I rarely run too many "high power" VSTI at once ... and in fact, there's a a number of VSTI installers/updates that are sitting on the desktop machine, uninstalled.

I'm surprised you're not getting a OpenLab Neko synth Bones? You seem to me like the 'hardest working c**t in EBM' around here? That would be just the ticket for a guy like you IMO? But then again, Kraftwerk has everything now on laptops as well? And you seem to put on a 'lively performance' with unique wardrobe and fashion accesories, which should be as viewable as possible.
In this day of age, I'd say go with a good lappy then?

I voted yes, but it's really only "sort of" -- I bought my laptop for music, but before that I tended to upgrade every couple of years to keep up with gaming anyhow. Different needs though; a half-decent CPU and a kick-ass GPU are fine for gaming, whereas music will eat all the CPU I can throw at it and GPU is almost irrelevant.

I could be wrong, but I think he was referring to Poll option #3 (self-confessed idiots), not the three posters above him.Kriminal wrote:f**k you ya prickkritikon wrote:I see there are 3 idiots already...

I buy a computer that is more powerfull than would otherwise be because of music use, but to be honest it really doesnt cost much extra at all (as Id own a computer for several other reasons). I wouldnt be able to get much usable harware with the difference.
The only chance of me getting a harware synth is if I need a new controller or have enough money and want a workstation for convienience to dabble on sitting on the sofa.
