How to make that sound...

I am working on an 80s influenced track, and want to branch out from the usual Linn tom drum fills that I've been doing. On a couple of synthwave tracks I have heard drum fills that sound to me like they have a metallic texture, and reverb applied in such a way to make the drum sound like it is very far away.

You can here an example of the sound I am describing at 0:47 in this Cobra Copter track:

And 0:24 in this Garth Knight track:

I have tried using metallic sounding snares and toms, but I'm a long way off nailing the sound. If anyone can point me in the right direction I will be very grateful!

its a small room reverb on the snare with a gate....and also try using slap delay.....so a quick delay like 32nd note , look up 80s snare reverb gate

Thanks for the suggestion zethus909! I know how to do gated reverb, but there is something else at work in those fills that eludes me. Especially the Cobra Copter example, the snare used in the fill isn't one that I recognise, and none of the snares I have auditioned sound remotely similar. Do you think it's all in the reverb?

Hi Sorry about the mega late reply dude!

I'm Garth Knight (real name Ged)

Toms are tricky to get right there's so many variations of the 80s tom sound but my faves are Simmons with reverb and gate / resample then drop back into your sampler - try getting Valhalla Vintage Verb (psst NON LIN setting!)

Hope that helps !

Hi Ged, I haven't logged into KVR for ages so sorry for my mega late reply to your mega late reply!

I have had much more success with toms since I posted my question, and am now using Valhalla Vintage verb too :) I have never messed with the nonlin mode though, so I will definitely try that out. Thanks for the tip!

Simmons toms were a bit of an eye opener, and I have had a lot of fun using some of the gated drum kits in the Korg M1 VST for a more realistic tom sound.

Thanks for taking the time to share your production knowledge, I really appreciate it.
