Bongo-like Sound

Hey guys, I'm looking for a little direction to try an achieve a similar sound using a synth. Its a bit hard to describe but it sounds a bit like someone hitting a bongo and chopping the tail of the sample. I have Subtractive, FM, and wavetable synthesis at my disposal.

You can hear it first at 0:59 on the track and then almost 2 beats later it gets chopped into 32nd notes, and panned. Almost like when your using a VoIP program and you get that distorted repeating jitter effect.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to similarly create that sound (without the jitter/LFO effect)?
