Cabasa back and forth

Cabasa (or similar instruments) often sounds to mechanical when programming with only one sample.
So, if making a copy of the sample how to transform it to get the "back and forth" sound?

Play a cabasa sample forward, then play it reversed. Forward, reversed, forward, reversed ... etc ...

The forward (or downward) shake is going to be a little louder than the backward (or upward) shake, usually.
