Several quick shares about pickups, trem springs, and the Orange MT-20:

1. We installed Dimarzio True Velvet pickups into a prototype Tele we're working on and it completely came alive. The bridge is hot and jangly, the neck is smooth and sweet. We installed a 4-way switch that puts the two pickups together in series in the fourth position, which sounds big and fat, like a big jazz box.

2. We installed a Dimarzio Bluesbucker into the bridge of a prototype Strat and it sounds a lot better there than in the neck position of my RG550. It doesn't sound like a P90, which is what Dimarzio claims, but instead sounds like a tough humbucker with a P90's midrange bark. It splits really nicely, too.

3. That same strat got the Suhr wiring that tricks the single coils into thinking they're seeing 250K pots. It succeeds at what it aims to do, although I find the combined neck and middle position to be a bit dark. Also, it certainly wasn't worth the effort, as it requires that pain-in-the-ass Superswitch. Next time we'll just use dark single coils.

4. That same strat also got the Raw Vintage tremolo springs, which are thicker than normal springs and are supposed to make modern strats sound like vintage strats. Too many things got changed today for me to know if they made a difference but I figured $17 would be worth it.

5. Finally, I plugged in the Orange MT-20 for a customer today. That's got to be the ultimate gig saver! It sounds surprisingly good and is loud enough for rehearsals even without a PA. I wish things like that were available when I was starting out.

Replying to my own post:

I just found out that the Music Man Silhouette uses a Bluesbucker in the bridge, a custom voiced Dimarzio single coil in the middle, and a Humbucker from Hell in the neck. I imagine this might be their way of countering the 250K vs. 500K pot issue, since the Bluesbucker and Humbucker from Hell are both brighter than standard humbuckers and probably sound fine (or better) with 250K pots.

sorry about the timing of this Eric

this is full of f-bombs and their mothers so be warned about the language...if people have 15 minutes give this a view...from his words on "warming sounding" to why you should spit on your guitar

Looks promising so far. One small dent in the back though, but for that price, me no worry. Had to change the strings immd, but all in all.

I promise I'll never say "no more" again. I'm hopeless.

Looks great. Are you going to turn your garage into a guitar museum like Scott Grove?

Nope garages are for cars. however, I've got axes stored now  I have my absolutely beloved 1520 in the hard case and the 1421 in the other. I have a bunch of work I'm planning on doing to the other twin (need all the parts) so it's out, but most of them go into cases.

Ordered some of these:

One noiseless, one heavy duty noiseless. I'm tired of packing foam in there. I figured I'd try both on the 1420 and the 1520 and see what combo works. I heard some good thing over at SS.org about them being quiet as advertised.

Shims for the twin I'm working on, gotta yank the trem on that one and file the knife edges. Decided to pass on the new brass block. Would like to get the stud lock mod someday.

for another 4-6 weeks I have a tel bari I built (and then they sole my idea :x :hihi: ), after that the only "tele" part will be the warmoth conversion bari neck with a tele headstock. I dont have the same pups though, I went with duncan p-rails and when the new body is done it will have a duncan mini jb humbucker between the p-rails ;)
