If you need a great soft synth for next to nothing, check out Synthmaster One.
Lots of sound potential here for very little money. $59.25 when you use the DEMOEXPIRED code.

Btw if you go and download that reaper now (http://www.reaper.fm), you can play around with it until you go and buy that workstation

Distorded Horizon,
Been thinking long and hard about this........I think I will buy the Korg second hand. I have asked the seller if it is midi compatable and apparently yes but the seller has never connected it directly this way. The seller was doing Korg to interface to computer. That was a huge thing for me to be able to have DAW interaction. I haven't asked how the interconnection of it works........choosing to compose through the Korg first or through the computer and flit between the two. Once I get comfortable loading samples, manipulating them and composing tracks at a basic level plus combing with a DAW on the Korg workstation, then I might think about other low cost hardware. DAWS on their own seem too much of a learning curve ATM so in the first instance I can concentrate on the Korg. I was wanting to sample my own voice so I'm assuming I can plug in a microphone to the Korg (will need to ask the seller this). Reason and Reaper sound really good. What's the difference between the two other than Reaper being cheaper? You mentioned a sample version of Reason. Not sure if it was you who mentioned about the Korg nano pad and nano pad 2. What's the difference between these? Wouldn't mind trying one of these.....they seem pretty cheap and easier to work with compared to drumming on the korg or computer keyboard.
Headphone jack is on the Korg Triton of course and I will need speakers or amp. I'm assuming speakers are better in terms of sound quality but more expensive. Thanks for your time.

Hardware instruments usually accept midi, unless they're really ancient. You still need either audio interface to send that midi from daw to your workstation, or usb to midi cable.
Differences between Reason and Reaper? Reason is a modular DAW that has built in so much stuff that you'd be busy for years. Piles of different FX, synths, samplers, drum machines.. Reaper doesn't have that much stuff (at least with nice UI's), but is cheap as soap. There are also other differences but I won't go those now.
I have NanoPad2. Nice for banging drums/percussion. IMO gives better results than using keyboard keys.
