Hey Havran,

That's bloody beautiful, man! Reckon I could dick around with it when I get the chance, and see what you reckon?

Cheers,

Watto

man... it sounds so simple, yet so sad. forget her, summon your focus back, and make that arrangement :)

Can you post the lyrics - I can understand 99% of it, but just to be sure.

i love it - very honest and very hypnotising

thanks for this

This was fascinating. I'm always amazed when something as basic as acapella vocal is powerful. I'd be curious to hear if putting instruments behind it made it more or less.

Post

cool. I'm always impressed by the courage to post vocals. it's a very plaintive song. I heard a celtic/bagpipey-ish thing in the background as I listened.

I was actually thinking of doing just more vocals...

thanks for your kind comments! :)

boogooloo, sure go ahead and mess around with it if you want to

Spion, here are the lyrics:

[another edit: switched the "shoulders" and "shadows" lines to match the recording -- this order of the lines might be slightly better after all]

"in a wooden house"
(C) 2005 by Kevin R. Fortin of Gainesville, Florida

-------------------------------

in a wooden house
a candle burns by an old guitar
shoulders lit by the moon

evening breeze
lifts a curtain by an empty chair
but it cannot strum a tune

I remember
where I was, when I heard
shoulda seen it coming
then again, no matter what occurred,
you were always prone to humming

there was ice
on the branches in a winter yard
outside our window

yeah I know
that's how it goes, but still it's hard
I miss you so

I remember
how you used to kid around
the way you'd smash the garlic
the way you snored
and the silly way you frowned
working on a new guitar lick

[some kind of bridge leading back to the B melody]

life goes on
and I know I'm not alone
still might shed a tear
let's just say
I am glad to have known you
while you were here

in a wooden house
a candle burns by an old guitar
shadows cast by the moon

summer breeze
lifts a curtain by an empty chair ...

Hey guys,

Finally got around to it! Here's the link - http://www.simonwatson.com.au/kvr.htm

Hope you dig it! I'm not convinced by the major sounding bit near the end, but I wasn't sure what else to do there...

Any opinions on my bvs? I have to say I think the original was perfect, and beautiful, by itself, but really wanted to try this...

you guys weren't waiting for me to go first, were you? he did have my permission ;)

[cool, I see that thomekk posted while I was writing this]

imo, the vocals are very well done and quite a contrast texturally from his great cover of "Hallelujah"

the arrangement went in a different direction from the fiddles I hear in my head, but that's the cool thing about collaboration and synergy

bgl1's backing vocals to my mind add something reminiscent of a sympathetic chorus from an old movie of the 30's and 40's

the major sounding bit is fine with me ... as I read the lyrics, the narrator is pulling out of grief and ready to move on

and I am honored that a talented pro musician would take the time to spruce up my raw scrap ... something cool to tell my parents, and it also inspires me in return
