Listened and liked, but the vocals need buttering up.

buttering up? heh yeah they do lack in many areas but I've gone over them "perfectly" after this post and it kind of ... "lost the feeling", so to speak.

I've let these two pieces go where they may at this point, and won't be revisiting them, only maybe if I do some live shows :)

either way I'm sort of bumping this to those who have not yet heard. (btw i've never listened to early genesis, so no idea what you mean! Haven't heard barely any Bowie... I was going for more of a "cure" meets "radiohead" feel...)

heheh.. yeah im guilty of that, im obviously no drummer, and i use revisit to track my music within tracktion.. more or less I've found myself very guilty of that, any suggestions when or where to hit the crash? I usually find that it really pushes whatever grandiose feelings that are coming out...

Hm, maybe you should... You might find some of the roots of the stuff you like.

For me Genesis (Peter Gabriel era) are the unbeaten masters of melodious weirdness. Totally unexpected changes that seem so logical the moment you hear them, yet beautiful catchy melodies and that special storyteller quality to the songs. There's a certain compact sound which arises from the arrangement, the whole band almost "being played" as one complex instrument.

I can hear those qualities in your work, a real sense of dramaturgy. For instance that moment around 0:30 in "Creature", where the whole band kicks in, is VERY Genesis! The song pushes forward, never gets boring and finally comes to a logical end.

Regarding the cymbals... well, I'm not a drummer either, just can tell when something's wrong. Anyway, I'd try to let them follow more the dramatic flow, more sparse here and more concentrated there, certainly vary articulation as well. The rest of the drums is very good imo and serves the songs well.

yeah thanks for the compliments as such, but I definately don't want to be known as "prog-rock"... I guess the more weirder I tried to get and more "chaotic" arrangements, people are saying I sound like this band or that... I want to sound unique, so I'm definately going to stray from my epic sound... I want to be compared to my bloody valentine /the cure / verve or something...I feel like being compared to genesis is like "been there done that".. The very reason of why I "compose" the way I do is so that I don't become bored upon each listen... Back to the drawing board :)

btw when you say "the whole band", it is actually just my programming in revisit / tracktion, and guitar and voice :)
both songs written in about 1 hr apiece

No, don't think that! Even the bands you want to be compared with have their roots, and they can't deny them either. Know your roots and find your own way. And no worries, you DO sound unique! Besides, I don't think that being compared with early(!) Genesis would be a shame, but that's just me of course...
btw when you say "the whole band", it is actually just my programming...
Yes, I'm aware of that - the more impressive it is. Still has that Genesis vibe... :P

Me, I'm just... a bloody hobbyist fooling around with some cool toys - ... but I know what I like... I've been a fan of Genesis for over 30 years now, and listening to them never got boring because of the sheer versatility (today's marketing specialists would probably make up dozens of individual genres from that stuff). But stay away from ALL after 1975! The last great album they did was "A trick of the tail" imo. After that it went downhill, the storyteller had left the room. To be clear: I didn't want to imply you sound like Genesis, I just happen to hear some familiar elements in your music, elements that made their music great back then - from my point of view anyways. So please forgive me my enthusiasm. :)

cheers,
