Had this track been made in the '80s, I don't think the drums would have attracted so much critcism. When heard in that context, they sound ok.

When I mix instruments, I find it important, and useful to listen to them in isolation from, and in combination with the other instruments. Metering (and practice) will definitely help you to arrive at an EQ solution which is beneficial. Better use of panning will help you to carve out space in the mix to allow instruments whose frequencies conflict with one another to co-exist.

One thing I have noticed with this mix is that there is a fair amount of headroom. This makes mixing easier when trying to balance relative levels, and also makes any subsequent mastering process less troublesome.
