I haven't watched the video yet, but I was right there with you in the 80s. These days, I keep my hardware integration very simple: one long MIDI cable and two long audio cables from my audio interface to whatever synth I feel like recording at any given time.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.
