Wubi allows you to create a virtual Linux partition as a single file on your XP-formatted (NTFS) drive where you can install Linux. It also installs grub so you can dual-boot between Linux and XP. Installing is a simple double-click and uninstalling is done through Add or Remove Programs control panel. This is a good way to play with Linux without reformatting or repartitioning. You only need about 5 GB free space on your drive.

Ive been thinking of installing a dual boot system with Ubuntu for a while now but one thing bothers me - , probably already been discussed , but is it possible to copy audio files between a Linux and NFTS file system ?

Wow ! The reason I want to use Linux partly is for internet stuff as there are so few virus - would setting up linux like this within windows still afford the same protection against Trojans etc or is it just a kind of imitation Linux which looks like Linux but is basically a windows program ?LBN wrote:Wubi allows you to create a virtual Linux partition as a single file on your XP-formatted (NTFS) drive where you can install Linux. Yes, you can mount your NTFS file systems in Linux.Dreamw wrote:Ive been thinking of installing a dual boot system with Ubuntu for a while now but one thing bothers me - , probably already been discussed , but is it possible to copy audio files between a Linux and NFTS file system ?
Wubi lets you install and run a real Ubuntu system. The only magic it performs is by installing it to one large file on your Windows XP partition -- basically a large .ISO file. When you boot your computer you're given the option to either boot into Windows or Ubuntu.Dreamw wrote:Wow ! Just to mention 64Studio has been updated to "Airadne" 1.4.
Not many changes on the surface but many internal ones so have a read up on the changes.

It seems the main Wubi download is just an 9.7 MB installer, and then you need to be online to actually install? Is there a complete offline version where all the needed files are present without the need for an internet connection?

Grab the "alternate" ISO of the distro you want (e.g., ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso) and put it in the same directory as your Wubi app.guitarzan wrote:It seems the main Wubi download is just an 9.7 MB installer, and then you need to be online to actually install? Anybody tried the Musix distro
http://www.musix.org.ar/en/index.html
It's a 100% free multimedia operating system intended for music production, graphic design, audio and video edition, and all kind of tasks. It contains an enormous collection of free (as in freedom) programs that can replace Windows.

I saw this today:
http://www.lionstracs.com/store/
It's basically a computer + controller in one box and it runs on LINUX. The company is making quite an investment into the OS. That's good. I hope it pays off for them.
The description says the software will be available to the public as open source but I'm not sure if that includes sample libraries.
