What is the best USB interface for $250? (went with Zoom R8 @ $299)

So I am justy curious about USB-enabled mixers. They generally only usually have a stereo in for USB into your DAW so no big simultaneous multitracking, but if it is possible to have a stereo pair act as two separate mono inputs in something like this I would be fine with that, as long as I have decent preamps. Just I'm wondering how many channels I would every really need. Anyhow, just throwing this out there, what do you think?

This looks like it would suit me, enough inputs that I won't have to switch out my instruments but not too much that tracks go unused. And then I could still buy a Korg nanoKontrol pad with the xy pad So the main thing to know is if the two stereo channels can be used as two inputs. And if latency is too much of an issue.

This is twice the price but reading the specs it seems like a very good option: 8 ins and you can take it on the go without the computer, record and later transfer back t9o the computer, with a USB 8 in interface, and Mackie control support. I don't know about the included drum machine but it can't hurt anything This is a pretty cool little item, I will look for some reviews though:

It may be best just to save up for this.
OO, there is a version without the drum machine and as many internal tracks, which is fine for me, $100 less:

This may be it for me provided it can be an adequate interface. Still has 8 ins, 8 faders, Mackie support etc.

OK, I've decided on the Zoom R8, even cheaper than the other two @ $299 so close to my target price. It only has 2 inputs but I have no outboard gear except my guitar and mic, so that won't be a big deal and I could always get something more beefy if that becomes an issue. I didn't want the r16 because no drum module and smaller display, even though it has more tracks. I COULD use asio4all and add in my computer's inputs and my old Toneport I do believe, in a pinch.
I know this doesn't get me many more tracks, but being able to have a drum machine, mobile recorder (I like the mics), and a control surface all in one unit will make this very versatile, I can work away from the computer even! on the deck or under a tree, capture everything and then be able to bring it in to my DAW later.

You can get the Focusrite Scarlett for a song, pun intended :p
Dont get the behringer unless your budget really is a factor

it is actually a huge draw. That 'secure boulder in a rushing stream' sounds great. I wonder if the internal mics can pick up that sound?glokraw wrote:Also record while at the beach, on a secure boulder in a rushing stream,
or in a grove on a windy day, natural ambience + guitar on separate track.
Cheers
Anyhow, I can see sitting with the thing, playing the drum machine with some headphones on and just scatting into the thing to sketch out a song. It would be great to get a little traveler guitar to go with it, having built-in effects is great.

I used to have a Dr-5 when they first came out:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1994_ar ... ssdr5.html
and this in some ways reminds me of that, having the drum machine and then the ability to add instrument tracks (audio vs. synth but basically you get a similar sort of machine. I was thinking any ideas I sketch out with a guitar with this could easily be loaded into Studio One and have the melody or bassline turned to midi. Just the very fact that so much is integrated in one device will make me learn it and use all the parts of it, instead of having it only sometimes used it would be really the heart of my system. Kind of what I got the DR-5 for way back when.

I could see myself getting the R24 at some point, and then use the R8 in conjunction with my laptop mostly. I think it would be cool to have such similar machines and so have very similar workflows, though maybe I wouldn't end up using the onboard bits of the R24 much. Hmm... such cool tech man, I'm stoked. I just have to stew on it for a couple weeks and make sure I'm committed to this. if anyone has any suggestions on what course to take it would be appreciated.

I still keep coming back to it, but I'm also looking at the TASCAM US1800, mostly because of possibly being able to make payments on it. I don't need that many inputs, though.

I ended up getting the TASCAM. I tried to find some low-cost items at zZounds that would round out my order for the Komplete Audio 6, but I just couldn't find anything I wanted, so I went for the TASCAM US1800. Because of the condition of my desktop, I think it will fit better, anyway. I don't have anyplace to put something with controls on the top.
I'm finally getting a real interface!
