Yes, what lachrimae said is correct. Doing a test in Samsung Magician won't show the issue, because the benchmark test in Magician is creating/writing a new temporary file and testing the read/write speeds.

The way the issue original was discovered is that a user was copying a large file to another hard drive. The file took much longer to copy than expected, which did not make sense based on the fast read times we would expect from an SSD. He then did some research and discovered the issue appears for files older than than a few months. Newer files read at SSD speeds, older files read at much slower speeds.

I've not yet used diskrefresh on my drive. I'm hoping that the firmware is released this month, and then I can test whether it restores things back to normal. It's not certain that the firmware is being released on Oct 15, since the only article that mention that date is from a German tech site. Crossing my fingers that Samsung fixes the issue.
Thanks/all

It's really hard to keep up with this stuff.

Thanks for this post, guys. I tested with SSDReadSpeedTester (http://www.overclock.net/t/1512915/read ... ected-ssds), and I was affected by the problem. I used Diskfresh (http://www.puransoftware.com/DiskFresh.html), and it took care of it. I have a Samsung 840 (non-EVO), and I was affected by the problem. Looking forward to the firmware update from Samsung, but if you have the slowdown problem on older files like I did, DiskFresh fixes it temporarily, and should get me by until the firmware update is available.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the info.

I just ran the tests on one of my systems that has a 840 EVO:
Before DiskFresh: 104MB/s average read speed
After DiskFesh: 534MB/s average read speed :o

Drive bought in april 2014

I have another drive (2/2014) in my laptop, I'll check that, too.

I have 2 500gb evo's in a raid 0 array for OS and programs and 3 840 pro 250gb's in raid 0 for data and so far I haven't noticed any slowdowns. I do have acronis doing full backups weekly with incrementals in between just in case.

Already noticed some slowdown on other 840EVO 250, firmware update should come 15.10.

I just benchmarked my Samsung SSD's and both my EVO and my 840 PRO are showing crazy low read speeds - like so low as to be almost off the scale! The write speeds are fine. It seems this problem is not restricted to the EVO. Has anyone else had similar issues with the 840 PRO? I hope the firmware update next week sorts this out!

Post

People are seeing the problem on 840 Evos and normal 840s. People have also tested the 840 Pro (which uses MLC) and have not reported seeing the problem that is affecting the 840 Evos and 840s. So that fact that you are seeing low read speeds with your 840 Pro is kind of strange.

I just recently replaced my macook pro system drive with this, where I also keep many samples for Kontakt and Omnitsphere and others. It's been great so far.

Does this problem affect macs too? How the heck do you even apply a firmware update anyways...

Post

Yes, the problem affects macs, the issue exists independent of what operating system is used.

I did a little googling for you related to your question about updating the firmware if on a mac.

Assuming the fix is released in firmware, updating firmware for macs is tricky based on this thread
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1682996

In summary, you would have two options

1. Run bootcamp and use the Samsung Magician software in Windows 7.
2. Download the ISO from Samsung's webpage, burn it to a CD/DVD, then boot from that drive and run the update firmware process. However, some people in the macrumor forums posted they were unsuccessful with getting the firmware executable to update. Others were uneasy about the power cycle step.

Hope this helps.

Did someone mention the 15th for this? Or was that simply a ballpark?

Post

The update hasn't been officially released yet. However a couple of tech sites have been testing the fix from Samsung. So hopefully the fix is close to being released to the public.

Here are the links to articles on the upcoming fix:

http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Storage/Sa ... back-speed

http://techreport.com/review/27212/sams ... h-old-data

Summary of the articles:
1. Fix requires a firmware update
2. You need to do a cold reboot after the firmware update
3. After the cold reboot, Samsung Magician will then run another windows process to restore read performance. This process could take up to 4 hours depending on the size of your drive and how much space is used up.
4. You need at least 10% free space for the process to be able to run the restore read performance.

Also, another forum recommended that people backup, because in one of the test cases, the update corrupted the MFT. Hopefully, Samsung will have ironed out all the bugs, but it's always good to backup.

Lastly, it's not clear if there is a Mac version of the fix. All the articles above ran the fix on a PC.

4 hours??????

My system flies fast enough that I'm not really hip on that

I have a 750gb so I'm sol.

Post

Yeah, the 4 hours was an estimate for someone who has a 1TB drive (like me). I figure that once Samsung releases the firmware update, I'll watch to see how the upgrade goes with the people on overclock.net. If things go smoothly for them, I'll download it and just run the upgrade process overnight.

Hello,

Looks like the firmware update for the Samsung Evo was released:

https://www.samsung.com/global/business ... 3-11000279

At the bottom of the page is the program: Samsung SSD 840 EVO Performance Restoration Software. There's also a note that Linux and Mac DOS versions will be released end of Oct.

Others on overclock have updated success.

I'll run benchmarks pre and post update and post back with the results. Will take a few hours because the drive is currently slow.
