Laptop speakers blown?

Hey,
I have had worse and worse sound out of my on-board laptop audio. No sound at all from right and only low, crackling sound from the left.
I opened up the case to see that they are both plugged in firmly to one socket.
Is it likely that replacing the physical drivers would solve this or more likely something on the motherboard?
I was messing a lot with the "Use beyond 100%" volume control on LINUX... I may have simply overloaded them with audio..

Have you tested the output of audio using headphones? If the audio sounds normal in headphones, then the speakers may be damaged or you may have a faulty headphone jack.

Ya. Headphones are fine. So, it must be those $5 speakers in there.Thanks for helping me think that through.
