Hi,

Trying to record audio from a yamaha P115 to a Dell laptop computer using a USB cable, the recorded audio is a piano preset from the P115. However it's states in the P115 manual, the USB cable is for transferring MIDI data, how then is it possible to record audio from the P115 to the laptop given their are no quarter inch ports on the laptop, only a 3.5mm

Buy the right cable or an adaptor, or pick up an audio interface.

^ This. If the PC has no audio inputs and USB only transports MIDI, then you need an audio interface

Using an adapter could work fine, but first check the actual connector capabilities on the laptop. Some laptops feature mic inputs only. These could be mono only, and you can blow them up if you feed them a headphone or line signal.

Maybe easiest is to just record MIDI in your DAW and let a VST play it (GM soundfont could be sufficient).

Yes the laptop has a headphone / mic combo port. Would then 2x 1/4 inch to 3.5mm cable be sufficient for recording audio? Also can i rely on the internal sound card of the laptop to convert analog to digital?

If its a mic/ headphone in/out combo you're going to need an audio interface. Your keyboard needs to connect to a line level input (line in).

First you need to split the 3.5mm TRRS combi into separate mic & headphone connections. Eg using this adapter:

Then you can use ONE regular 3.5mm to 1/4" jack adapter for the keyboard signal. But this is wrong for several reasons:
1) you're feeding a line (or headphone) signal into a mic input. The level is a magnitude 100 or so too strong.
2) the mic preamp & AD converter in your laptop are barely sufficient for Skype. Expect low quality noise fest.
3) it will be mono only.

Take this advice: record the midi and play it back in a DAW with a VST that features a bog-standard piano sound. Added bonus: you can correct your mistakes by editing the MIDI score itself.
